We Are Dancing on a Powder Keg

Social media has been full of the Democrats talking about the Stormy Daniels affair with the joy and sniggers of three-year-olds who just discovered there’s a word for what you do on the potty.

This is predictable and not at all upsetting, because if these people had any political sophistication and understanding of history, they wouldn’t support a party that is more fully behind the full-on communism that has killed a hundred million human beings in the 20th century and bids fair to at least an attempt to continue its work in the twenty-first. Also, most of them have the understanding of history of Occasional Cortex and think that politics is a sort of game. All they’re really doing is signaling their membership in the “tribe.”

All well and good, but there is an aspect of this that worries me: they actually expect l’affaire Stormy to change our minds about Trump. And from their polls – snork, giggle, remember 2016? – they’re absolutely convinced they’re winning.

This worries me because it tells me just how far from reality their mental processes have gone, particularly their image of us.

Look, I don’t deny we have any number of religiously conservative people. Note, these are not just religious or conservative, but people whose only interest in politics is that their religion tells them to be conservative. And maybe those people really can be turned off voting for a president because he is sinful. (Raises eyebrow.) Except that, you know, all of those I personally know have accepted that the president —as sinful and imperfect as he is — has been the vehicle for something else.

Voting has never "turned" me "on". It's always like getting a spanking.

Thanks. I am getting a bit tired of the crowd that says well we'll accept Trump for the time being until someone better comes along. You want better? Better in what way? You want someone who never made a bad choice - well what you get is someone who never made a choice at all, e.g. Jeb!. You want a businessman who never made a sharp deal, never had an argument with the IRS. Well you will get someone who never made a deal at all and never made his own money, e.g. Jeb!. The strategy of the Marines is not to win fair fights. It's to deny the other guy the field on which to have a fair fight.

Trump is the best it gets. Flawed? Sure. So are we all. So what? He does stuff. Ever see Jeb! do stuff?

Twice divorced? Are his ex's unhappy? Are they destitute? Have his children's lives been ruined?

We need not speculate on Jeb!s chances in a general election because it's counterfactual speculation. Even without Trump the man-I use the term in the sense of a male gendered member of the species-hadn't a chance.

I think the revolver analogy is apt. Since he was not a politician, he had no record to review. All we had was what he said on the campaign trail and interviews he did during his life. In short, he could have lied throughout the campaign like leftists do, and then when elected, do what all leftists do which is execute communist policies.

Now that we are two years plus on, we see he was not lying and has done his best against the deep state swamp with little support from a GOP lead house of representatives, plus a Chief Justice who has effectively become a liberal.

As it is, 50% of the public is still sitting out elections. As the Communist horde stands boldly declaring they are coming for your property and liberty.

Fell for the line did you? That is what my friends and colleagues here in DC want you to think - that unless you are part of the in crowd you don't have a record we can review, so you are a risky chance who hasn't proven himself.

THAT perspective is dead wrong. What does any politician in DC have a record of? Even those who spout the most agreeably conservative positions. Grant had a record if anyone wanted to pay attention. As as a Captain in the Army fighting in Mexico he demonstrated a strategic understanding no one else possessed. No one cared. He didn't polish someone's brass the right way. Trump has a record of getting stuff done. It's right there for anyone to see.

Good post. I agree, nobody better than Trump is likely to come along in our lifetime. I'm in my mid-50s and the only other president in my lifetime I can truly admire is Ronald Reagan and he came early in my life. I am seeing Trump as the other bookend - with a lot of mediocrity in between.

I hope to be kicking around here for another 20-30 years or so but I'll probably never see another great president again. Our political system rewards "go along to get along" mediocrity and just doesn't favor the cream rising to the top. Trump got to the top only because he is a true fighter. What they did to Trump during the 2016 election cycle would have destroyed virtually any other man. A man like that comes along once in hundred years or so.

David was imperfect, too, and yet God chose him. President Trump will slay the deep state giant.

Speaking as a born female of the species (though I have been excited to move into the next phase, ‘questioning,’) LOL!

As for this: “well what you get is someone who never made a choice at all, e.g. Jeb!”

No kidding! But “please clap” anyway. And do it standing on your tippy toes...

Good post.

I think most of us have "grown up".

Dan Bongino states it quite well when he characterizes the attitude many of us have towards President Trump as "Battlefield Morality".

By that, he means that things you might not normally accept or approve of are tolerated or shoved aside because what is at stake is far more important than a priggish judgement on a sexual peccadillo.

For my part, I have never ascribed to the notion that the President of the United States (or any politician for that matter) would be someone that would be a role model...though they can be in certain cases. I feel the same way about celebrities, actors, and sports figures. In the same way I only care about why someone is a celebrity, how they act, and how they play play their sport, I only care about how effective a President is as a Chief Executive and how he or she represents my values and observes the guidelines of The Constitution.

The author speaks for a certain bloc, those who held their noses. He makes some good points because that bloc exists. However, it doesn’t include all of us.

Meanwhile, the radical left is only one side of the coin. We won’t lose America because of them. We’ll lose it because nobody is punching back. We chirp about having a shooting war someday, but we won’t even take our kids out of public school and tell the world why.

And that’s where it starts; you give your tacit approval of the left when you give them your children for half their waking hours. You put your kids in their boot camp. The other half of the day you’re too tired to counteract the poison effectively. Then you hope they’ll wise up somehow, and you hope the GOP will grow spines, and you hope the media will shut up already, and you hope God will turn the ship around, which is your job.

But after we let it befall us, we’ll shoot our way out of socialism, just you wait and see!

I'll be the first to say that I did not like President Trump initially. I thought that he had some serious character flaws, and I truthfully wasn't sure if his presidential run wasn't just a big scam to drive his reality TV ratings.

However, Hillary was unquestionably worse. So, given the choices between doing nothing, picking a nation-ending candidate, and voting for Trump .... I voted Trump and mentally crossed my fingers.

I'm pleased to be completely wrong in my initial assessment. President Trump has exceeded my wildest expectations, even with half of the Republican party, 98% of the media, and 100% of the dems working against him. He's dragged the Republican party to the right - something that I didn't think I'd see happen again in my lifetime - and removed 100's (1000's? more??) of DC swamp creatures from both parties. DC is a town that needs to be turned upside down and shaken out occasionally, and Pres. Trump turned out to be just the guy to do it. Is he a good man? Probably not, but sometimes the best man for the job isn't a good one.

Barring a 180 degree turnaround - I will happily vote FOR him (not against the other guy...) in 2020.
