‘Jen the Archer,’ once a social media target, now the face of California wildlife hunting
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Mar 3 2019 | Kurtis Alexander

REDDING — One morning four years ago, a recent graduate student who lived in San Diego and had an unusual knack for shooting a bow awoke to a flood of hate messages on her Facebook page.

Jen Benedet had launched a program to teach kids how to hunt, and animal rights activists weren’t happy.

They accused her of turning children into murderers. On top of trolling her internet accounts, as well as stalking her at home, they started an online petition to “stop Jen the Archer,” thrusting her to the center of an international debate over hunting.

“All these things about me said I shouldn’t be a hunter. I think that’s what brought the attention,” Benedet recalled last week at her new home in the foothills outside Redding. “I’m sort of this Millennial foodie that happens to like hunting.”

Now 35, and more accustomed to controversy, Benedet is embracing the result of her public advocacy of the sport. Jen the Archer is now the face of hunting and fishing for the state of California.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is hoping to tap the same charisma that drew children to Benedet’s archery classes — and that unleashed an uproar from anti-hunting groups — to recruit a new generation of sportsmen and sportswomen.

Hiring Benedet is part of an effort to halt a decline in hunters and anglers in California. The state is trying to reach beyond older, rural communities where the pastimes are popular and attract a younger, more urban demographic to the sports.

I once went on a blind date with the FATTEST vegan woman out there. Or at least close.

She had pet rats.

Had some choice words for my friend THAT night, as I called him after the date.

The vegan “meatball hero” wasn’t AWFUL, I can’t lie, but to make it taste almost real God knows what they put in it.

and as an American with Italian grandparents, it was not something I ever ate again.

Sorry Grandma Rose.

That’s why I hate blind dates. My batting average was 7/10, they were hot. And obviously this is your fault by not doing your simplest duty as a dude that has been asked since cavemen ruled the caves...simply ask your friend “is she hot?”

The comments section is good for a few laughs. Such as this one: “Eating one’s prey isn’t a reason to hunt. It’s an excuse used to justify the act of hunting. She said it herself. She doesn’t hunt to put meat on her table. She does it to experience the adrenaline rush she gets tracking down and killing a living animal.”

To quote Animal House “You ####ed up. You trusted us.”

:)

I wanted to KILL him, in the realest sense of the word, while I was on that date lol

I guess it was a favor as his hot girlfriend was trying to find a mate for her beastly, insanely left wing friend.

Pet rats. SMH.

At least once you’re married, you know what level of craziness to expect!

Since cavemen...lol

it was simpler back then: cavemen hit the ones they like over the head with a club and drag them in. Not this BS “Hi, I’m ***, what’s your name?” crap..

I'd follow her into the woods.

What kind of backward grip is that with the draw?

As an old navy guy told me once, “go ugly early and you’ll always have a date”.
