Oakland teachers, on strike for a week, ended their walkout when they reached an agreement with the school board that will increase their pay 11%, reduce class sizes, and enforce a moratorium on approving new charter schools.
The Bay area is the most expensive place to live in the nation, so the 11% raise was easily justified. Reducing class sizes is also a good thing. But why a moratorium on charter schools?
A similar halt to new charters was part of the deal ending the Los Angeles teachers strike.

The test of basic skills should be a prerequisite “after” a strike for all teachers.
It’s not about the kids.
It’s about the MONEY.
That’s all it’s ever a out with Democrats.
God forbid that other schools compete with government sponsored indoctrination centers.
They described the family as extremely religious and said the parents had so many children because they believed “God called on them” to do so. They added that the children were expected to memorise long Bible passages as part of “very strict homeschooling”.
This just happened last week so hopefully they AT LEAST address what is happening to children who homeschool. At least a minimum of a visit from the county every month should be mandatory. Testing perhaps. This is an astounding true story.
If taxpayers doubled teachers’ salaries would student grade performance improve? Probably not. Therefore, it’s not “all about the students.”
Same could happen to public or private school kids, no way am I letting any government official in my house with their bias and try to determine my schooling methods of my kids. Now if you are adopting kids or some such, especially at an abnormal rate then I think a wellness visit may be warranted.
Two of our daughters were homeschooled for a part of their middle/high school years, being neither malnourished nor dirty. Between all three of our daughters they have seven degrees. Had you shown up to perform your nanny state, virtue signalling checks you would have been received very rudely. Oh, and btw, it was a religiously based curriculum as well. So, respectfully, bugger off!
The economic model of the Bay Area is not sustainable. The winners of the Tech lottery called start ups and public employees who demand and get big raises are the only ones that can afford it. Even those who have been living off of rents from their parents suburban houses are selling and bailing out. My son, who owns his own business, has moved to Nevada. When 100% of profits go to State and local taxes, something had to give.
Well, with our new gov here in NV, and senate and assembly and Lt gov and AG, he may want to leave some of his stuff boxed and ready.
As I understand it, class sizes were reduced by one to two students in Los Angeles. Aren’t you glad this was all about the students?
He does have a concern about that. At least their two votes from CA will help reverse the trend.

I heard several times that Los Angeles and others demand tutors or teaching assistants who speak the languages of the dozens of non English speaking children aliens. Otherwise lawsuits.
Obviously they would come to your house and say I wish all our visits were like this.....unfortunately.
