Gap, Victoria's Secret and even Tesla: 4,300 store closures already announced this year

A recent wave of store closure announcements will hit shopping malls across the U.S., leaving hundreds of storefronts empty.

Just this week, Victoria's Secret said it will shut around 50 locations in 2019 — when it normally closes closer to a dozen each year; Gap said it's closing 230 of its namesake brand's stores over a two-year span; and J.C. Penney announced it plans to shut 18 department stores and nine of its furniture and home locations in 2019.

That builds on recent store closure announcements by Gymboree, Payless ShoeSource, Charlotte Russe and Ann Taylor parent company Ascena Retail, to name a few. A whopping 4,309 store closures were announced by retailers just in the first two months of this year, Coresight Research said in a research note on Friday. That's well ahead of the number of announcements the market research firm was tracking this same time a year ago, it said.

I went to a mall for the first time in ages the past two days to pick up some winter shirts at Macy’s. The place was absolutely DEAD both days. The first day I was there around lunch time; the next day (for a pickup) was around 5 PM. There wasn’t enough traffic or sales to pay for the labor behind the counter, much less the inventory, real estate, utilities, and insurance. It was really eerie.

JC Penney is in the mall I went to and I thought to myself “Are they still around?”

As a chicK, i’ve got to say Victoria’s Secret is nothing but a bunch of crap. I never could understand the allure of a store that sold such shit to people who would pay top dollar for shit. Victoria’s real secret is that not one of their bras fit anyone over the age of 23. Awesome, you 23-year-olds! You are getting hosed!

I walked by a Tesla store at the mall in Natick, Mass. They had three cars in the store. Seemed strange.

Same thing with bath and Bodyworks. All they do is sell the same basic body wash and add flavor into it. It doesn’t nourish your skin, it doesn’t make you softer. It’s all about the fragrance. But the 23 year olds and teens I think it’s the best thing ever!

I thought Victoria’s Secret sold lingerie for the boudoir. Bras are unnecessary in the boudoir. And unwanted.

Their perfumes are nice, their underwear is over-priced and often terrible. Their bras can be OK, but again, overpriced.

I think they let their customers down, catering to a physical ideal that few women match. Better to make underwear that accentuates the positive and minimizes the negative, but that really isn’t what they do.

Yep. No need to burn a bunch of gas going all over when you know what you want and can simply have it delivered in a day or two.

Everything is moving online. I think that customization is another trend, and all of this stuff is off the rack.

Their perfumes Are overpriced as well. It’s all about the branding. Stupid people think whatever brand they have on their perfume bottle makes them better somehow

Regardless of where they think their bras need to land. The product is crap regardless. There are people that will Spend 50 bucks on a piece of crap bra, and that’s all they care about

Mall stores offer no value-add. If you like shopping in malls, you go to one and buy stuff. If you don’t, you go to Amazon and buy the same products at a 30% discount with free shipping.

Smaller retailers who know how to offer a great customer experience are still thriving. But almost by definition, retail chains large enough to afford major mall rents and national advertising campaigns are not going to be able to offer anything beyond a minimal level of customer service. It’s no surprise these dinosaurs are succumbing to the twin meteorites of Amazon and Alibaba.

I’ve given gift cards for Bath and Body Works to many females of all ages on my Christmas list. All seemed very happy to receive them. Heck maybe that’s part of their business model, to sell gift cards. I’ve always seen other men buying gift cards when I’ve gone in there.

We had girlfriends working at Wendy’s who had money to shop there. But these days the 15 dollars an hour wage killed their jobs.

They tend to be cheaper and more generous than the big cosmetics houses though. Hiding these perfumes in the middle of a store full of over-priced underwear seems a less than stellar marketing strategy.

Well this makes me sad. Penney’s is the go-to for window treatments, though they’re otherwise no better than any other department store.

I’m partial to pretty things so I shop VS a lot, but they’re pricey. My mother mocks them without mercy. “Victorious Secretions, home of the fifty-dollar wedgie...I had to walk all the way to Bergdorf’s to blow money like that.”

Never been to a Gap, since I know they don’t stock my size zero. Not many places do. :(

Payless has a good selection and reasonable prices.
