In America, talk turns to something unspoken for 150 years: Civil war
WAPO via LMTonline ^ | March 1st, 2019 | Greg Jaffe and Jenna Johnson

At a moment when the country has never seemed angrier, two political commentators from opposite sides of the divide concurred last week on one point, nearly unthinkable until recently: The country is on the verge of "civil war."

First came former U.S. attorney Joseph diGenova, a Fox News regular and ally of President Trump. "We are in a civil war," he said. "The suggestion that there's ever going to be civil discourse in this country for the foreseeable future is over. . . . It's going to be total war."

The next day, Nicolle Wallace, a former Republican operative turned MSNBC commentator and Trump critic, played a clip of diGenova's commentary on her show and agreed with him - although she placed the blame squarely on the president.

Trump, she said, "greenlit a war in this country around race. And if you think about the most dangerous thing he's done, that might be it."

With the report by special counsel Robert Mueller reportedly nearly complete, impeachment talk in the air and the 2020 presidential election ramping up, fears that once existed only in fiction or the fevered dreams of conspiracy theorists have become a regular part of the political debate. These days, there's talk of violence, mayhem and, increasingly, civil war.

A tumultuous couple of weeks in American politics seem to have raised the rhetorical flourishes to a new level and also brought a troubling question to the surface: At what point does all the alarmist talk of civil war actually increase the prospect of violence, riots or domestic terrorism?

Speaking to conservative pundit Laura Ingraham, diGenova summed up his best advice to friends: "I vote, and I buy guns. And that's what you should do."

That’s my understanding as well. Still, the people that choose not to vote in presidential elections have outnumbered the turnout for either party for 100+ years. Voting is a pretty low bar, it doesn’t take that much effort. Seems like more would simply deign to do it if things were actually that dire. I think leading up to the civil war turnout was like 80%, but it was way different then so I’m not sure if it’s a good way to compare. We haven’t had even 65% eligible voter turnout since 1908, if I recall. Most of the time since it has been way less than that.

The War Between the States wasn’t actually a civil war.

Somebody always says that. Tell it to the Clays, the Breckenridges, the Thomases, the Lees, the Crittendens, the Bateses, the Goldsboroughs, the Terrills or any of the other families torn apart by the conflict. Tell it to West Point classmates who found each other on the opposite sides of the battlefield.

Two brothers born in Scotland found themselves in that position:

In the aftermath of the battle (which was won by the Confederacy), James coolly wrote his brother: “I was astonished to hear from the prisoners that you was color Bearer of the Regmt that assaulted the Battery at this point the other day.” He also said that that if they met again, “you have but to discharge your duty to your cause for I can assure you I will strive to discharge my duty to my country and my cause.”

Tell them it "wasn't actually a civil war" ...

Talk about civil war like it's expected, unavoidable, necessary, or winnable ...

That is precisely what it is. You can not negotiate with those who insist all THEIR problems are YOUR fault, therefore it is incumbent on YOU to make THEM happy.

Absolutely but who controls the drones, surveillance equipment would be essential, entities like Twitter, Facebook, Google be neutralized and people told the truth not what the propaganda media want them to hear.

Nicolle may be right about a “war in this country around race” being “greenlit”. She’s just mistaken about which president is responsible.

Exactly

I'm afraid there is no civil war in our future - this world is much too well managed for that to ever be allowed to happen. The fact that we are well armed does keep us on the slow train to the new world order, but fast train or slow, either way we are headed to the same destination.

They are correct in the sense of division but they are WRONG it’s about racial tension.

We don’t want to be subjects of a socialist regime and oppressed by a tyranny of the majoriy concentrated in megalopolises, the 21st century plantations, over taxed, underserved, oppressed by failed policies, ruled by corrupt Democrats who want issues to run on and never solutions.

Why are Democrats trying to legalize marijuana when we all agree the settled science shows smoking anything is genuine health risk? It’s about control.

Oh no, I believe they will use them against anyone and everyone.

What percentage do you think will fight when those they’re shooting at shoot back?

The practice of the American left has been to attack only when they’re reasonably sure of their own safety and security.

The AR/15 M/16 family regularly does quite well in National Match competition. A good, match service rifle with an appropriate load is sub MOA all day long. I have seen a scoped 5.56 National Match upper shoot 1/4 minute at 100 yds. Typical rifle, two to three minutes with service ammo.

That may not be designated sniper rifle capable, but when you consider the general versatility, (the ability to swap calibers by simply changing the upper) the AR/15 family is a great general purpose choice.

Controllable firepower in any war is always a plus too.

“vastly overestimate the number of people who care as much as they do”

I’ve long been intrigued with the number of people who just go about their daily business regardless of how bad things are (at least, insofar as history will deem those times really bad). Tyrants need subjects; subjects need food/water/shelter ... so long as both are satiated, they’ll maintain the status quo. Very few will actually revolt, or facilitate revolution.

“You would think more would simply deign to vote before taking it to the streets or whatever.”

We’ve been voting, and merely yelling at each other, for a loooong time.
We’re still peaceful (on the whole). Violent incidents are brief & isolated, taking up little more than a few city blocks until breakfast.

I do expect there will be an incident which crosses the line. Little idea what, but something that will inspire “it’s time” for a critical mass. Current theory: consider how the DC Sniper and Boston Marathon Bombing incidents practically shut down the cities ... now combine the public hiding in the latter, with the military presence of the former, multiplied by (say) 2 per state. Not sure which side would really make the first move, but just 100 independent individuals entering open warfare would really start a conflagration (and I mean in a bad way). Most citizens would be merely onlookers, glued to their TVs and Cheetos.

BTW: the title of this thread/article is absurd. Talk has been about that subject for decades; we’re just reaching a level of conversational intolerance I’ve not seen (culminating in AOC’s “we’re in control”, “enemies list”, and “proposal to take over practically all aspects of society” - with lots of popular & political leadership support).

And remember that the North acquiesced to the South’s secession, to wit overthrowing the government of half the nation; it wasn’t until CSA attacked a small island that the US Navy had literally built that war commenced and didn’t stop until that island was reclaimed and all consequential issues were resolved. Seems the US Civil War wouldn’t have happened if Lee & friends had just said “leave the island alone; they built it, it’s theirs.”

Let's work it out - democrats can have the large bankrupted states like California, New York, Illinois etc they run now - and that they've run into the ground...

We'll take the red states...like Florida that are fiscally responsible. Democrats can move out of our states and into democrat hellholes... Place they'd feel more comfortable...

Another advantage, Democrats won't be able to prop up the Deep State Counties around Washington DC that house their bureaucrats... Two birds with one stone - they take the bloat with them. Democrat's capital will be in California, or Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco or where ever they want it... AND they take the Deep State goes with them...

Why wage war when we can get a divorce?

“Deer hunters outnumber most of each of the world’s militaries.”

As I enjoy putting it:

Every year the US Unorganized Militia engages in live-fire live-target war games, constituting mobilization of the world’s largest army - and made entirely of snipers. Operating with minimal direction, each participant supplies his own sniper rifle, ammo, supporting arms, transport, camouflage, food, shelter, etc and creates impromptu fire teams or proceeds independently. Aggregating some 18,000,000 under arms, Operation Deer Season is a recurring resounding success.

Non-compliance of red flag laws in blue states could be the trigger after we reach a threshold (who know what that will be). Exurbs and rural areas.

It’s not really civil war, it’s more like American revolution against globalists a la British raid Lexington-Concord to take the guns.

Remember during American revolution although there were some regional concentrations, loyalists, revolutionaries and the indifferent lived sided by side.

But the end result could be a division. The American revolution resulted in the division of NA into the US and British Canada.

Just “leave me the he11 alone” would suffice. We’ll continue footing the bill, if they’d just stop swiping the credit card like crazy and micro-managing us.

"Trump, she said, "greenlit a war in this country around race."

It's not because of race, blithering Useful Idiot(Look up this term).

It's because corrupt Marxist democrats want to install a tyrannical, unconstitutional government, by any means possible.

And I will add that the whimpering, timid, cowering, Never-Trumpers, and every weak, compromised, traitorous bass-turd who had knowledge of years and years, even decades of, massive corruption but did absolutely nothing about it, contributed to this current state of affairs.

In fact, not only did they do NOTHING, but, they plotted and schemed with the Corruptocrats to silence and punish anyone who did try to bring it out.

Disgusting. No one who has ever charged off a troop transport, into a hail of bullets and blood, did it so that in the future, a bunch of miserable worms would surrender this nation to a bunch of crimminal communists.

It's not like they are being asked to do physical battle.

All they have to do is stand with President Trump.

Stop scheming with evil incarnate on the other side to bring him down.

Stop backstabbing those who are helping our president with trying to restore this place.

And if they (RINOS) don't have the intestinal fortitude for speaking out, either resign-Or, as a courtesy to all those who have sacrificed that this country might not perish from the face of the earth:

Do the simplest thing and just stay out of the way of those who are fighting the good fight.

In this way CW2 might be avoided.

(Rant: Off)
