Senate panel backs Trump court pick Neomi Rao, as holdout Republicans ease objections

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to advance President Trump's nomineeto replace Brett Kavanaugh on the high-profile D.C. appeals court, with two Republican holdouts backing off their objections and joining colleagues to support Neomi Rao.

The committee voted 12-10 along party lines – with GOP Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Joni Ernst of Iowa joining their fellow Republican lawmakers – to endorse Rao for a seat on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. The seat was vacated when Justice Kavanaugh joined the Supreme Court.

Rao, 45, heads the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, where she plays a key role in Trump's efforts to roll back federal rules and regulations. She has never tried a case in state or federal court, but previously worked in the George W. Bush White House.

Rao’s confirmation has proved controversial as both Republican and Democratic lawmakers raised concerns about her past writings on issues ranging from LGBT rights and affirmative action to sexual assault and abortion.

Hawley had said he was unsure about Rao's position on abortion, which Hawley opposes. He also questioned her views on judicial activism and other issues.

But he said Thursday that after meeting with Rao he is convinced she would interpret the Constitution "according to its text, structure and history" and not current social mores.

Hawley, a freshman, was criticized by conservative groups and the Wall Street Journal editorial page for raising questions about Rao, but said he will vet all judicial nominees thoroughly, regardless of ideology.

From the nominee’s Bio, she sounds like a good choice. But the Rats will try to delay the confirmation.

Our country is facing a crisis as the Trump Administration is packing the courts with ultraconservative ideologues intent on turning back the clock on our rights and liberties. AFJ is leading the opposition to unqualified and unsuitable nominees.

Bedrock truth of conservative credentials and judicial philosophy of a prospective nominee is best left to Daniel Horowitz et al:

https://www.conservativereview.com/news/fight-judicial-nominee-neomi-rao-reveals-big-schism-right/

He was right on Gorsuch and Kavanaugh squishiness. They, like Rao, are not from the same cloth as us. (but even with FR who know these days... quilt... panoply of populism, libertarianism.... etc)

She is eminently qualified. Pretty soon being put in time out in kindergarten will be enough to DQ a Republican in media eyes.

If the 'pubs stop letting their infiltrators run amuck, they'd own the US Senate. That's in spite of letting some conservatives lose. It's gridlock (if they had any guts) if the Dems running the House stay stupid, and that's as it should be. Just keep passing things and have President Trump over-ride House votes.

But let's not forget. Illuminati/DeepState Republicans don't support our issues.

Folks, this is all Yertle and Lindsey Granite. These two have been superb in knocking these judge confirmations out.

By the end of next week, Trump will have more Circuit Court confirmations than Ronald Reagan at the same point in his term, and Trump did it with a one-month gubment shutdown.

Also, Zen Master, my source on the courts, says he expects next week Yertle and Granite will change the rules on debate time, drastically cutting down the “stall” the DemoKKKrats are pulling, and the confirmations are gonna flow like milk and honey.
