GOP nightmare as Alabama's Roy Moore signals he might run again
Washington Examiner ^ | February 28, 2019 | David M. Drucker

Roy Moore, a conservative lightening rod who cost the Republican party a Senate seat in deep-red Alabama, is signaling fresh interest in mounting another campaign in 2020, sparking alarm on the right that Democratic Sen. Doug Jones could be gifted another unlikely victory.

Moore, 72, a former state judge, made the rounds at last Friday’s Alabama Republican Party dinner gala. A few days later, a new political action committee run by Moore’s son, Caleb Moore, issued an email fundraising appeal.

Republican insiders, including conservative allies of President Trump, fret that Moore — derailed by sexual assault allegations in a 2017 special election that should have been an easy layup — might divide the party in the primary and advance to a rematch with Jones. On Wednesday, a Moore confidant pointedly declined to rule out that his buddy might run for Senate next year.

We have a guy like that in New Jersey. His name is Steve Lonegan. He has "more lives than a cat" because he's always running in GOP primaries for various elections for state legislator, House member, U.S. Senator, governor, etc. But he has never won an election for a higher office than local mayor ... and he hasn't won any election, period, since 2003.

I love the guy's politics and I always support him when he runs for office, but I'm realistic enough to know that he's really a loser when it comes to his political career. I don't think he's ever gotten more than 35% of the vote in a contested election for an office outside his own town.

That whole endorse/unendorse thing is considered part of the liberal activity behind the scenes.

He lost by only 12,000 votes, as I recall.

He was railroaded and people here on Free Republic fell for the liberal subterfuge.

I was objective enough to recognize that Moore was an awful candidate. I never said a damn thing about it during the election campaign, though. In fact, I'm probably among the few people here on FR who would have voted for him even if every accusation against him was true.

When it comes to politics, the guy's a loser. He should disappear from public life.

He is not a bad candidate. Please give us your evidence to support that conclusion.

He lost by 12,000 votes, as I recall, and that was after a barrage of lies and fake bots in the final weeks.

Moore isn’t so much a problem in AL.

Yes, he is.

Check out his track record in his various campaigns for statewide office over the years.

He ran in the GOP primary for governor in 2006. He lost, and then had the nerve to complain that the GOP rigged the primary. He also accused George W. Bush of undermining him, too. This was after he got less than 34% of the vote against a sitting GOP incumbent, mind you.

He was so popular among Alabama Republicans that he got less than 20% of the primary vote when he ran for the same governor's office four years later.

I wonder if this guy would win an election even if the only voters were people in his own family.

If he does, there will be a April 14 primary runoff

Judge Moore was unfairly smeared.
But smeared beyond hope of recovery, at least for a another Senate run.

As such, it is best Moore decides not to run.

The guy traveled to Philadelphia to watch a stupid football game three days before the election, dude. When it comes to political optics, it doesn't get much worse than that.

Forget about margins of victory. This isn't a swing state we're talking about here. He lost by 12,000 votes in a state that Trump won by almost 30 points.

I do live here and he was Kavanaughed. But, he is too emotionally driven and I wish for someone who states their case more logically. Of course, I support the conservative candidates. Doug Jones was simply unacceptable. But in the primaries I am looking elsewhere than Moore.

Alabamans should support Moore out of pure spite for having been fooled.

Only if they like the sound of Senator Ford.

You are absolutely correct.

Luther Strange is a corrupt GOPe swamp creature who Mitch McConnell wanted in the Senate. When the people of Alabama disagreed, Mitch made sure that Jones was the winner.

It will be interesting to see if Strange tries again. Many here at FR will be thrilled if that happens.

Doug Jones just Voted to make Infanticide Legal.

That alone should get him the boot.

Moore, has been forced from office in the past only to win higher office... he’s won more than a few elections and would have won the Senate seat, even without the GOPe basically undercutting him without the last minute Gorsuch attacks.

I am not saying he’ll win if he runs, but I sure would not count this guy out.

Jones was never going to last more than the term he was finishing... Personally I would assume Sessions would go back to AL and run for his old seat again....

Moore has no track record of ever accomplishing anything. He’s been serving in judicial roles for almost his entire career in public office. There’s nothing wrong with that, but to me that says he has always had a very steep hill to climb in any election for a post in any other branch of government.

He’s a terrible campaigner. His TV appearance made things worse! Who takes time out from a senate run to go to a baseball game at a crucial moment in his campaign. He must have been utterly convinced he had it in the bag. Which means his campaign personnel were also awful- equally clueless & arrogant about his true situation!. (Remember he picked them!) He’s Alabama’s version of that Missouri guy whose lack of campaign skills gave MaCaskill another term!

He couldn’t sufficiently motivate the GOP base to come out and support him even with the obvious Rat fraud & dirty tricks. He’s yesterday’s news and should stay that way!

You need to get facts straight when you post that kind of thing here.

Three Democrats voted with the GOP majority on the "born alive" bill: Manchin (WV), Casey (PA), and Jones (AL).

This meant that on this particular vote, Doug Jones was more conservative than Lisa Murkowski (AK), who abstained from voting. Kevin Cramer (ND) and Tim Scott (SC) also didn't vote, but my understanding is that they missed the vote due to flight delays getting back to Washington this week (we had some high wind conditions here in the Northeast that wreaked havoc at the airports).

The writer must have not gotten the memo; a defeat is now a resume enhancer — a defeat has projected cross dresser O’Rourke to the top of the presidential sweepstakes.

O'Rourke, running as a gun-grabbing San Francisco liberal, almost won in Texas.

Roy Moore, running as a conservative Christian, lost in blood-red Alabama. To a liberal.

There is a considerable difference.
