UPDATE
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) released the following statement about the decision:
House Democrats chose today to make a purely political statement against President Trump instead of taking seriously the national emergency at our countrys southern border. The Presidents declaration along with legislative action to appropriate funds for border security will answer the call from experts and border security personnel on the ground to provide the resources needed to stop illegal entry into our country and the dangers associated with it.
Through their resistance, Democrats are closing their eyes and turning their backs to human trafficking victims, victims of drug addiction, and Angel Families who have lost loved ones.
Not only does the President have the legal authority to declare this national emergency under two federal statutes, the move is far from unprecedented: there are currently 31 national emergencies still in effect since the National Emergencies Act was enacted by Congress in 1976.
House Republicans will continue to listen to the experts and the American people, who agree we need stronger border security. I invite House Democrats to join us in protecting the citizens of the United States.
Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) released the following statement:
While Speaker Pelosi and her liberal lieutenants refuse to support the money necessary to secure our border, President Trump took an oath to keep our country safe, and is using all legal tools available to protect Americans from the crime, drugs, and human trafficking that comes across our southern border every day. Speaker Pelosis resolution blocking the national emergency declaration is another example of her refusal to secure our border, and would leave Americans less safe. I was proud to stand with victims of illegal immigrant crime today and vote against this useless and irresponsible resolution.
ORIGINAL
The House of Representatives passed a resolution on Tuesday evening to overturn President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration along the southern border. The declaration was a way for Trump to build his highly-anticipated border wall without Congressional approval.
The predominately came down party lines, with the exception of one Republican, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MN), who voted with Democrats in opposition to the declaration.
Amash took to Twitter to explain his vote while also slamming fellow Republicans:
The same congressional Republicans who joined me in blasting Pres. Obamas executive overreach now cry out for a king to usurp legislative powers. If your faithfulness to the Constitution depends on which party controls the White House, then you are not faithful to it.
The vote passed with a vote of 245-182.
This vote in the house and then the senate supersedes and makes unnecessary any court action. The judiciary has no standing since the congress represents the states and the people and is the check and balance against presidential power.
In short Trump, after the state acts, should tell the judiciary they have no standing.
How many votes to override a presidential veto in the house? In the senate?
Try that line at a town hall meeting of your constituents, congressman.
all DEmocrats yes + GOP Amash
All other Republicans vote no.
Two thirds vote in both Houses necessary to override.
All show. Does not matter.
Of course they love them, they unfailingly vote democrat!
290 in the House, 67 in the Senate.
The Rats don’t have them.
yeah looks bad for the bad guys
When the dems go to court, the judge should laugh and say you had your shot.
No, there were 13 GOP yes votes but Amash was the leader of them.
This whole fiasco reminds me of the notorious “Boland Ammendment” that congress used to usurp Presidential power from Reagan.
Neither side wanted to challenge it in the SCOTUS, but the traitorous media couldn’t screech loud enough how “the President was breaking the law” to their sheep.
Amash is a loose cannon. And every once in awhile he sends friendly fire on his own party. He’s really just a small “L” libertarian who caucuses with the GOP.
CC
so sorry , I did request delete of double post error incorrect.
No problem, nothing to be sorry for.
290 in the House plus 67 in the Senate to overturn a veto. They do not have enough in the House let alone the Senate.
McCarthy is also trash. Only talks tough about the wall now that the dems have voted against the emergency order...
I know, it’s very shocking.
Not a sngle one of those bastards should be allowed one minute of peace. Flood their offices with calls and emails and make them wonder if they will get out of town hall meetings in their districts with their heads attached.
“Pres. Obamas executive overreach now cry out “
Oh yeah, the executive branch has absolutely no interest in doing anything with something like an international border.
