Concrete: the most destructive material on Earth
theguardian.com ^ | 2/25/2019 | Jonathan Watts

It also magnifies the extreme weather it shelters us from. Taking in all stages of production, concrete is said to be responsible for 4-8% of the world’s CO2. Among materials, only coal, oil and gas are a greater source of greenhouse gases. Half of concrete’s CO2 emissions are created during the manufacture of clinker, the most-energy intensive part of the cement-making process.

Concrete is the cement of our civilization.

Does mr. watts live in a grass shack?

Jonathan Watts probably flies around in private jets like Bernie and Al Gore. Socialist creepy monsters APPLY the laws on the powerless - they NEVER follow their laws.

Anyone notice how fat the Venezuelan President and his staff have become while the people of Venezuela are starving?

To commies the food taste better when the powerless are forced to watch their children starve to death.

Stalin was fat too.

Same with Mao...

Fat indulgent commies and starving children ... indulgence and death - hand in hand - the Commie way.

I believe the superior Roman concrete used volcanic rock ash in it’s formula.

Yes, but you can wear them …

They are very warm. I have a coat in the closet made of several of them.

See ... we do need that beaver protected status - except during trapping season

Water vapor accounts for 95% of all greenhouse gases. And as you have pointed out, the effects of each gas vary. IIRC, the EFFECT of water vapor on the greenhouse effect is 98% or something.

Limestone + heat = quicklime + carbon dioxide

Quicklime is an essential ingredient in concrete

For the chemists here:

1 mol of CaCO3 + energy = 1 mol of CaO + 1 mol of CO2

(sorry, don’t know how to do subscripts)

"Taking in all stages of production, concrete is said to be responsible for 4-8% of the world’s CO2"

Bold faced lie. I think they meant to say 4-8% of man-made sources of CO2.

BS! All human activity combined adds up to about 3% of the global CO2 emissions! Concrete does not contribute 4-8% of all global CO2 emissions by itself. This article is completely fake!

It's right behind beer.

If one dares to look at the wikipedia article on "environmental impact of concrete" you find this little jewel in the section on different approaches that would reduce the CO2 impact of concrete.

"Another approach is to pump liquid carbon dioxide into the concrete before mixing. This can reduce the carbon emissions from concrete production when combined with a power plant or other industry that produces CO2"

So they would suggest you expend the energy and cost to liquify CO2 and then pump it into the concrete being mixed. Hard to believe but this is what we are dealing with.

One stat that never ceases to amaze me is that China produces approximately 33% more cement than the rest of the world combined. For several years now, China has been producing approximately 2,500 million metric tons while the rest of the world is producing approximately 1,800 million metric tons.
