Critics of the Second Amendment often misunderstand it as primarily a right to hunt and ward off burglars. But Americas Founders viewed the right to bear arms chiefly as a check against government tyranny.
That latter purpose makes perfect sense to at least one Venezuelan who has fled his homeland in the wake of its disastrous socialist experiment.
Guns would have served as a vital pillar to remaining a free people, or at least able to put up a fight, said Javier Vanegas, 28, a Venezuelan teacher of English now exiled in Ecuador, in an interview with Fox News.
The government security forces, at the beginning of this debacle, knew they had no real opposition to their force. Once things were this bad, it was a clear declaration of war against an unarmed population, Vanegas said.
In 2012, President Hugo Chavez pushed through his rubber-stamp legislature the Control of Arms, Munitions and Disarmament Law, noted the Truth About Guns blog.
The law, which was generally supported by the public at the time, stripped Venezuelan citizens of every firearm and round of ammunition they owned.
Chavezs handpicked successor, Nicolas Maduro, has blocked most of the food and medicine supplied by the United States and other countries from crossing the borders with Brazil and Colombia.
At least four people were killed last weekend and hundreds wounded in clashes with protesters and volunteers trying to unload truckloads of aid.

Thanks.
I saw the back end of 69 last year, I still work about 12 to 16 hours a day on my farm.
Everything from felling, bucking, splitting, trees for firewood, to plowing and planting my fields, and pruning my orchard.
I can still put a 7.62 or 308 round in the black at 300 to 500 meters.
There’s on old saying that goes something like “don’t f#ck with an old man, he’s to tired to run away and to sore to take a beating, so HE WILL JUST KILL YA”.
Remember age, guile, and experience will trump youth and enthusiasm every time.
To the best of my knowledge, no one has initiated said proceeding.
The Supremes have declined to hear both Drake and Peruta which both wound their way up through the circuit courts and reached them. Both cases were carry cases.
Maybe New York State Rifle and Pistol Association will give some clarity, but maybe not.
Maduro is now using food as a weapon to oppress the people.
Well, I hope the issue is clarified Real Soon Now!
These patently unconstitutional, but allowed and enforced “red flag” laws should scare the bejeebers out of all of us!
Remember dp0622’s words...”i’ll have a large pie with extra cheese and sausage” :)
And there’s always someone willing to sell you the heavier stuff if you need it.
Or give it to you for free if they favor your cause.
Kurds, Afghanis and Chechnya folks come to mind as hard to defeat.
I know another farmer on here. Farmer Dean. We’re pals.
Should have died 15 times over last year from surgery gone bad. He’s home now and recovering well.
Even the most in shape white collar guy could not have survived what he did.
You guys are freaks of nature.
In a good way :)
The sequel to Unintended Consequences
“The Chair is against the Door. “
Yup. Be careful who you piss off right?
Follow the money. Where does it go?
Pretty much nailed it. They keep the controversy going, so they have power and great golfing and power lunches.
More proof the 17th Amendment needs to be repealed
YES!
I am totally surprised that these patently unconstitutional laws have not been challenged and overturned.
The problem is, it takes a lot of money to challenge these laws, and the people having their weapons seized do not have the money to fight back.
I am not aware of a pro-2A group that has taken up the “red flag” cudgel!
Indeed. There’s no reason why it would be harder to obtain such weapons in a country that actually makes them.
Old whatshername has got to assume room temperature and a conservative justice appointed before this issue is resolved.
2A language is clear - laws inFRinging on 2A are unconstitutional.
All we need now are judges who are not LIEberal ideologues!
