Venezuelans regret giving up guns

Critics of the Second Amendment often misunderstand it as primarily a right to hunt and ward off burglars. But America’s Founders viewed the right to bear arms chiefly as a check against government tyranny.

That latter purpose makes perfect sense to at least one Venezuelan who has fled his homeland in the wake of its disastrous socialist experiment.

“Guns would have served as a vital pillar to remaining a free people, or at least able to put up a fight,” said Javier Vanegas, 28, a Venezuelan teacher of English now exiled in Ecuador, in an interview with Fox News.

“The government security forces, at the beginning of this debacle, knew they had no real opposition to their force. Once things were this bad, it was a clear declaration of war against an unarmed population,” Vanegas said.

In 2012, President Hugo Chavez pushed through his rubber-stamp legislature the Control of Arms, Munitions and Disarmament Law, noted the Truth About Guns blog.

The law, which was generally supported by the public at the time, stripped Venezuelan citizens of every firearm and round of ammunition they owned.

Chavez’s handpicked successor, Nicolas Maduro, has blocked most of the food and medicine supplied by the United States and other countries from crossing the borders with Brazil and Colombia.

At least four people were killed last weekend and hundreds wounded in clashes with protesters and volunteers trying to unload truckloads of aid.

Funny thing is I saw a sticker the other day that said:

“Republicans hate you and want you to die!”

Pretty dang said when folks actually believe that crap.

If the tyranny involved the army we would need anti aircraft weapons among other things.

Well, at minimum, you'd need to know where the pilots lived. Can't fly 'em if you can't man 'em.

Whenever a leftist says a gun is not appropriate for hunting and, therefore, should be banned, I always respond the same way: What does hunting have to do with this?

The responses are hilarious.

It’s like asking a global warming believer why global warming is bad for Siberia or Canada.

Many believe the Venezuela scenario could not happen in the USA.

Many question if the military would turn on the citizenry if the Venezuela scenario happened in the USA.

Watch and learn.

Watch and learn.

Send every Venezuelan home with an AR-15 and pistol, plus 1,000 rounds each.

Instead of learning from history Venezuelans chose to learn for themselves firsthand.
The ones still alive that is.

Pretty sure the critics of the 2nd amendment DO NOT misunderstand it at all.

Exactly. They know that an armed populace is much more difficult to "bring to heel".

There have been fantastic radio ads for the NRA.

One has a woman from Venezuela saying (from memory)they told us we would all be safer if they took away all our guns. It has been anything but safe ever since. The gangs and the criminals and the government still have all the guns they want. We are helpless and terrified to go out at night. 90% of murders are always unsolved.

That ad is so important for all Americans to hear.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get transcripts of all the NRA ads? I couldn’t locate online (maybe someone else could do it better.)

They didn’t give up their guns.

Their weapons were taken from them by a dictator violating the laws of Venezuela.

".... [Were] they sold on safety and common sense control?..."

I know you're probably being sarcastic, because that's how the democRATS in the US are selling their gun-control efforts.

But from the article: ".... In 2012, President Hugo Chavez pushed through his rubber-stamp legislature the Control of Arms, Munitions and Disarmament Law...."

The populace didn't have a choice. Dictator Chavez rammed it through his "owned" legislature.

Chavez and Maduro both knew that their end game would require killing the opposition. If they had no weapons, it would make it easier to destroy them.

So, was there a “right” to posses arms in Venezuela? Or was it just an “It’s okay if you have a gun but...........” kind of deal. I didn’t find it in a quick look around the web but somebody may know off the top of their head and have a ref.
