Andrew McCabe, the disgraced former acting FBI director, reveals in his new book that Robert Mueller temporarily left his cell phone behind after a meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office and that the phone later had to be retrieved.
McCabe did not explain why he included the detail in his book.
McCabe says that Mueller left the phone behind after Trump had interviewed Mueller as a potential candidate to replace James Comey as FBI director. The interview reportedly took place in the Oval Office just one day before Mueller had been appointed special counsel in the so-called Russia collusion case.
In June 2017, CNN first cited a White House official as saying that Trump had interviewed Mueller to potentially replace Comey one day before Mueller was named special counsel. CNN reported it was unlikely that Mueller informed Trump of his soon-to-be-announced special counsel gig. According to multiple reports, the White House was only given short notice that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was going to name Mueller as special counsel.
In his anti-Trump book, titled, The Threat: How the F.B.I. Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, McCabe, citing Rosenstein, relates the story of Mueller leaving his phone behind after the interview with Trump.
McCabe wrote:
In this same meeting Rod talked about interviews with candidates for director. Then he flipped back to talking about possible candidates for the special counsel job. It was hard to track whether he was talking about candidates for one job or for the other. One minute, he said Mueller had been asked to interview for the position of FBI director; Mueller had gone in for an interview with Trump, and left his phone there, and then the phone had to be retrieved.

I would think that Mueller surrendered is phone before his interview with the President.
Mueller then left the White House, and then realizing he did not have his phone returned to retrieve it.
He pulled a Costanza.
Surely the Trump team swept the whole house before DJT took up residence.
Or anyone else from the Mueller team that was ever around DJT.
Why were cell phones allowed inside the Oval Office? I was under the impression that they got left in the ante room.
Sounds like BS so McCabe can sell his book
The problem might be deeper, such as a splintering of interests. Let’s say that the phone was discovered and immediately brought to the attention of the Secret Service. Let’s then propose the fact that the Secret Service may have attempted to determine if this was a threat to the security and privacy of the office of the president and examined the device as evidence before returning it, or perhaps reached out to another agency for information (avoiding the FBI and DOJ) to help ascertain if the president’s safety and privacy were intentionally being compromised. What would happen if these agencies feel that there were bad actors (or at least actions that appear to be bad faith) and the phone episode was considered evidence? Would it even be possible for the Secret Service to run an investigation using other agencies to run counter intelligence FOR the President?
I guess going into the oval office is not the same as going into a skif.
Obviously not all that secure. Look at what Omerosa got away with.
P
Was it recording??
Remember, Melania would not move into the WH for months? They were sweeping/’renovating’ all that time..
Ok, so now we have Mueller and Rosenstein trying to record (or actually doing so) Trump. How many others? Toss them all in GITMO.
Yep - since Rosenstein decided that wearing a wire would put his head on the chopping block, they had to try another ploy....
Omarosa did. So, that’s makes Mueller, Rosenstein and Omarosa and counting.
The Threat: How the F.B.I. Protects America.
He got part of the title right.
and the President's statement about "I might have recordings"....was a search for a particular response from Comey.
> “The purpose is to make people think that there is an electronic record of illegal conversation or conversation about illegal activity. I seriously doubt that there is any place more secure in the world than the Whitehouse.”
Yes. But there exists technology now that can mimic and alter a person’s voice much the same way a photo can be photoshopped. Scary times are upon us.
Ostensibly, Mueller could claim the President said something that he did not say but he won’t because it would be foolish. Donald Trump speaks knowing every word he says is history. Many Presidents before him thought the same way, for example, Abraham Lincoln.
Further, the President always has tapes of his meetings and an advisor or inner circle member with him.
So if McCabe is thinking there is an opportunity to manufacture evidence (something he has done many times in the past), he either lacks intelligence or is dreaming.
And how would McCabe know about this forgotten phone? Mueller wouldn’t call the FBI to retrieve a phone left behind. More than likely, if it even happened, White House staff found the phone and had an aide return it directly to Mr. Mueller.
