WASHINGTON On Friday, February 15, the Department of Veterans Affairs quietly posted that the agency now has 48,985 unfilled vacancies up nearly 4,000 since the VA started posting vacancy totals in August 2018. The muted rollout of the data which is only tracked and posted because of a push for transparency from the American Federation of Government Employees follows Secretary Robert Wilkies recent announcement that the Department is outsourcing care and funding from the already short-staffed and underfunded agency.

they also have a hell of a time filling positions because they pay does not equate well to private sector
Even though I am Canadian, I was offered a position in a VA hospital several years ago.
I graciously declined for a number of reasons. The pay rate was not one of them.
It’s all about the union dues.
SO sorry, I don't know what happened. There is a $65 non-refundable lost forms fee, and you lose your spot in line when you re-apply.
We should be able to see you about your compound fracture in 11 months. No, no pain killer; haven't you heard opiods are addictive? But you are allowed to purchase your own Tylenol from our pharmacy, if we have any in stock.
Winning!
The VA has never succeeded in anything other than treating our greatest treasure like garbage with impunity. I never used them and I never will.
Government unions. Ridiculous.
Site your sources. My ol lady went from private sector to VA.
You're ignorant and flaunt it.
Putz.. d:^|
“The Administration is Setting Us Up to Fail, says VA Workers Union “
Union? F you.
First of all, thank you for your service. M-60 gunners & A-gunners were an even bigger target than I, as a field radio operator and 81's FO, was. You guys made lots of NOISE attracting enemy fire. All I did was hunker down and talk!
That being said, thanks to the VA, I have had the following:
Emergency appendectomy
Triple bypass
Three cardiac stents
Cataract surgery, both eyes
MRI, CAT scan, Bone Marrow scan to detect a (probably non-malignant) tumor on the spinal nerves behind my heart
Lots of Dental work
I have always had excellent medical treatment, with kindness, from the VA Hospitals in Asheville, Salisbury & Charlotte, NC, in Baltimore and in Waco, Tx, in addition to my local clinic in Hickory, NC.
Thank you, American Taxpayer and thank you Veterans Administration!
Number one reason why the VA medical system is messed up and won't be fixed until unions are eradicated. Call-ins, several health care providers that don't give a hoot, and power mad Union paper pushing miscreants are the bane of that system. Pres. Trump should realize this.
Biggest screw-up in JFK's Presidency (LBJ would of probably instituted the same thing too).
It all comes down to clinic/hospital management. MOst are in it to serve Vets, too many are in it only for job security and a fat pension.
I dont know where you live, but Im in NE Ohio and have been going to the VA here since the mid 90s. They have provided me with excellent care, sometimes better than what I get from my civilian doctors. Would recommend them to any veteran.
First off, Chuck you, Farley! I've seen wayyyyy too many times that my ol lady has gone in early, stayed late or did weekends to accommodate our vets and I WILL NOT have you impugning her efforts like you just did without response. Whot an friggin jaggov. She was on the horn with a vet till 830pm this very evening tryin to get him squared away!
Second, if you've never been, how do you know? I've been (we are both vets) and I can tell ya that once ya get thru the BS administrative part of it the staff take excellent care of our troops (myself included).
I do understand that things happen as they always will at any organization that big. But don't be such an ignorant ass. There's always 2 sides to a story and being a vet does not necessarily make somebody a "good person". They can be hard-heads the same as the rest.
If you're a vet, Thank You for your service. But that status does not grant you carte blanche to be an ass.
If you're just some mouthy civvy, you and that damn union can both KMA and start RIGHT in the middle!
Agreed. They ARE the big problem at the VA.
Shut down EVERY VA hospital, give the vet a card, and let him go where he gets proper treatment.
They make it sound like that’s a bad thing.
Yeah; public sector Union’s really need to go away. Private sector is okay but I don’t trust any an Union. At least in the private sector there’s someone on the other side of the bargaining table.
It’s a well known fact VA employees can’t get fired unless they commit some kind of serious crime. In my humble opinion no one should have that level of job security. The possibility of getting fired for bad performance is what keeps a lot of people motivated in the work place. Others, like your wife, sound like they don’t need any extra motivation but they still benefit from the job security.
I had to switch clinics and now travel over an hour because they can’t keep a dang MD at the clinic in my town. Can’t blame the doctors; there’s not much here for people at their level. Even the civilian sector has a hard time and specialists are usually in a city somewhere. I get that they are better positioned to serve more people that way. I think it’s good that vets will get to see someone in civilian sector; especially if no docs are available at the local VA. But; I think a lot of vets will choose to stay with the VA and just see certain specialists in the civilian sector.
Time will tell.
Private sector will do the jobs. They can be fired for poor performance and incentivized for superior performance.
