De Blasio: ‘There Is Plenty of Money…in This Country, but, it’s in the Wrong Hands’

“I say, there is plenty of money in this world, plenty of money in this country. But it's in the wrong hands,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) declared on Sunday.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” de Blasio claimed that Amazon’s decision not to open a corporate headquarters in New York City is proof that wealth is in the hands of the wrong people:

“Let's be clear: No one chased away. This was Amazon's arbitrary decision. We had an agreement. If I made an agreement with you, and there were issues that came up, but we had an agreement, you wouldn't call me in the dead of night and say, 'Hey, we're taking our marbles, and we're going home.' Let's be clear about who made this decision. And this is the problem.

“When you have so much wealth and power in the hands of very few, it does not work for working people. I say, there is plenty of money in this world, plenty of money in this country, but it's in the wrong hands. And Amazon is making my point for me. What they did was arbitrary and unfair to working people."

Mayor de Blasio also argued that progressive policies can both redistribute wealth and stimulate economic growth:

“I think the challenge is to show we can do both, and in New York City we are doing both. We have 4.5 million jobs; we’re raising wages; raising benefits, giving people universal health care. We’re proving that progressives can achieve those things.”

Anybody who thinks President Trump is the performer under the big top should realize that the circus has three rings, and Democrats occupy all three of them!

yes deblasio you are the miracle worker, too bad it is unsustainable because you are enabling more and more leeches instead of responsible citizens. But you will be out of office before it really implodes so you can go right on beleiving your lie that you did good.

He is so full of it. If he had an agreement (not an agreement with contingencies as most agreements have) he would be suing Amazon for breach. I have no doubt that whatever they agreed to was tentative at Amazon’s discretion. And ultimately it would always be their decision - they could build the HQ2 and then decide to close it, sell the building, etc...

Bloomberg, Soros, Steyer, etc. Start there. That’s lots of money in the wrong hands.

Too much of it is in government hands. We need to reduce tax rates even more!

What an idiot. Dim Bulbeo thinks wealth is essentially "found." Some people are lucky enough to find a lot. Others are not so lucky. And since the lucky people will go on finding more wealth every day, all we need to do is take most of it away and redistribute it to the less lucky. That is his theory.

But if wealth is primarily created, and if its creation involves hard work and risk and sacrifice … well, then the world will not conform to socialist expectations.

I absolutely lionize this man. I was lucky enough to have dinner with him twice; the last time just after he bought his “retirement” farm in VT. He was a joy to be around and loved talking about his farm. His “Free To Choose” TV series was required viewing when I was teaching econ. He is missed...

This was Amazon's arbitrary informed and sober decision.

There. Fixed it.

He was/is the BEST spokesman this nation - nay, the world - ever had for free enterprise, freedom, and everything related to those matters. He was eloquent, clear, concise, witty, and never rude. He would be firm and not back down, but I never saw any exchange he had (on video...I never met the man...I’m envious of you, FRiend) where he went ballistic. We could learn a thing or 1200 from him today.

I was teaching at Creighton University when one of my colleague’s daughter was looking for a good MBA program. I’d had her in class several times and she was a superb student, albeit a bit naive and socially awkward. I recommended she try to get into Chicago’s MBA program, which she did. Of course, she had heard me praise Friedman a bazillion times and was familiar with his work. She was walking across campus in Chicago and saw Friedman walking towards her.

She said: “Aren’t you Milton Friedman?!”
Friedman: “Why, yes I am.”
She said: “I thought you were dead!”
Friedman: “No wonder you look surprised.”

You gotta love the man...

I think hes entirely correct but for all the wrong reasons. Corruption. I dont believe Amazon as it appears and that some interesting stories will come out in the not too distant but not immediate future.
