Sailor in iconic V-J Day Times Square kiss photo dies at 95

The ecstatic sailor shown kissing a woman in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II has died. George Mendonsa was 95.
Mendonsa’s daughter, Sharon Molleur, told The Providence Journal Mendonsa fell and had a seizure Sunday at the assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he lived with his wife of 70 years.

FYI ... The girl he’s kissing is not the woman who eventually became his wife. She isn’t even the woman he was with that day. She was just a random nurse he spotted and, in his sheer exuberance, made photographic history.
His target was taken by complete surprise and was reportedly not flattered by the gesture.

I actually like the expression on the girl’s face his right elbow is pointing at more than the iconic kiss. It also most seems to say “Why didn’t you pick me, sailor?” I was thinking the same thing about the sailor in the background.

I think the sailor in the background is having more of a "Why didn't I think of that first?" look.
But it is a great Kodak moment no matter how you slice it.
