Time to Panic

The planet is getting warmer in catastrophic ways. And fear may be the only thing that saves us.

By David Wallace-Wells

Mr. Wallace-Wells is the author of the forthcoming “The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming.”

Feb. 16, 2019

The age of climate panic is here. Last summer, a heat wave baked the entire Northern Hemisphere, killing dozens from Quebec to Japan. Some of the most destructive wildfires in California history turned more than a million acres to ash, along the way melting the tires and the sneakers of those trying to escape the flames. Pacific hurricanes forced three million people in China to flee and wiped away almost all of Hawaii’s East Island.

We are living today in a world that has warmed by just one degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) since the late 1800s, when records began on a global scale. We are adding planet-warming carbon dioxide to the atmosphere at a rate faster than at any point in human history since the beginning of industrialization.

In October, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released what has become known as its “Doomsday” report — “a deafening, piercing smoke alarm going off in the kitchen,” as one United Nations official described it — detailing climate effects at 1.5 and two degrees Celsius of warming (2.7 and 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). At the opening of a major United Nations conference two months later, David Attenborough, the mellifluous voice of the BBC’s “Planet Earth” and now an environmental conscience for the English-speaking world, put it even more bleakly: “If we don’t take action,” he said, “the collapse of our civilizations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon.”

I could put together a list like this but 100 times it's size for practically every single WEEK over the past 500 years. Not because temps are going up, but because this crap is happening all the time.

Yes. Before 1800 there were 4 million acres burned in Calif on average every year. The million acres that burned last year (or the last two years) was far too little. Fire suppression is their problem, not fire.

If the United States took every step possible, eliminated some causes of carbon emissions, raised taxes to pay for elaborate precautions, and no one else in the world {China, India, Africa} did anything, it would amount to NOTHING.

The sun is at a low in it’s cycle of sunspots so it’s bound to be slightly warmer.

If there a lot of sunspots (e.g. like in the 1950's) then the sun is slightly cooler when enough spots face earth. However as a general rule, when there are fewer spots the output of the sun is weaker and the earth will get a little cooler over time (there's a lag). That's the case now, the current cooling started a few years ago but it is just getting going. One of the reasons they are pushing this so hard right now is that they know there is more cooling on the way.

Yes, but generally speaking, my experience with women who hyphenate their names is fraught with conflict.

The point that was made in the video I saw was that in some communities, only the homes burned. Many cars, fences, blacktop driveways, etc. were scorched by adjacent heat, but never caught fire. But when a wildfire roars thru an area, it does NOT pick and choose. It burns EVERYTHING in its path. Very suspicious. As you mentioned; the LEVEL of heat was extremely above “normal”.

The temperature of the Earth has been declining for the last 8,000 years.

During that period, there have been four significant heat spikes.

We are currently living in the fourth heat spike, which, in fact, has been faster and slightly warmer than the three previous heat spikes.

However, the current temperature of the Earth is roughly the same as the “Medieval Warm Period” (c. 1000-1300 AD), and the Earth today is actually cooler than it was during the Roman Warm Period (c. 100-400 AD).

One word of caution....

The Climate Hysterics claim that the Medieval and Roman warm periods occurred only in Europe and/or the Northern Hemisphere, and not in the rest of the world.

M”aybe you should think about getting one of those Thermador car “swamp cooler” thingies that attached to cars in that era.”

That’s on my “to build” list. I’m starting a classic car parts business, so it isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

"Obligatory "Well it's a dry heat!" comment. 🌡🌞👹 " Ha! But the way I survive is throwing a quart of water down my shirt, so dry isn't necessarily dry :)

Live trees don't burn well but houses burn very well and completely. There was an ember storm, same as the Napa valley fires a year before. The embers catch on various parts of houses and they burn to the ground in an hour or two. They could easily be put out except that there were 1000's to put out and the fire department was rescuing people instead.

There was no wall of flame "roaring" through town. The numerous videos during the fire show the reality: spot fires all over the place, very windy and an ember storm from the much more intense fires in dead and overgrown forests outside of town.

Without the sun's heat, the earth would be as cold as one of the Kuiper Belt Objects out there beyond Neptune. So if the earth is getting hotter, it's the sun's fault.

The UN needs to send a mission, headed by David Wallace-Wells, to the sun to admonish it to knock it off.

If Global Warming were real then they would be pushing technological change instead of pushing social control.

This is just another way of pushing scarcity so we can all be poor and dependent on government. Global Government that is.
