SANTA FE A bill expanding background check requirements for New Mexico gun sales cleared a key stumbling block Thursday, as members of the Senate voted 22-20 to pass the measure after more than three hours of debate.
The legislation, along with other gun bills pending at the Roundhouse, have drawn opposition from most county sheriffs statewide and prompted at least two New Mexico counties Quay and Socorro to adopt ordinances suggesting they would not enforce the law.

Approved yesterday by the NM House was a "Red-Flag" firearms bill.
SANTA FE Amid tears and intensely personal stories, the state House passed legislation late Wednesday that would allow courts to order the temporary taking of guns from someone deemed an immediate threat.House Bill 83, sponsored by Democratic Reps. Daymon Ely of Corrales and Joy Garratt of Albuquerque, would establish an Extreme Risk Protection Order Act sometimes called a red flag law.
The proposal passed 39-30 and now moves to the Senate for consideration.
The proposal would allow a family member or police officer to seek a temporary court order to take a persons firearms if theyre deemed a threat to themselves or others.
Republicans said the bill wouldnt provide adequate legal safeguards before a gun owners Second Amendment rights are abridged.

Hopefully this will be fast-tracked to the SCOTUS docket.
You voted for Rat control of state government, Nuevo Mexicans.
Why would it. Weve had this in NY for four years now. It has been addressed by the NRA and NYSRPA to the Federal courts. It has wallowed. Perhaps if RBG croaks and is replaced their would be a chance.
There are ways around it. You and your friends be creative.
Only after RGB is replaced.
The people and their sheriffs need to declare New Mexico a Second Amendment sanctuary state. Elections do have consequence. The free stuff you receive isn’t worth the liberty and freedom you lose.
letter to the editor, Feb 8, 2019, Press Enterprise (SoCal)related and of interest:
“... it was 2010 when the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was declared fundamental to liberty, in the McDonald case.
Fundamental rights, as declared by a majority of the Supreme Court, cannot be infringed by a state law unless the state can show a compelling reason (more than just a rational reason) that the law is necessary, and narrowly tailored, to achieve a permissible purpose. This is a standard the courts call strict scrutiny.

Lets have sanctuary cities & counties for gun owners. At least that would be based on the Constitution, not a made up right to sneak into our country illegally.
It took very little time to destroy New Mexico by the left.
How about background checks of politician’s?
This ridiculous law is unenforceable.
The majority of weapons in this state
are unregistered. No way to track trades
or private sales. I can’t see ranchers
living miles from the nearest gun shop
following this law either. New Mexico
gun owners becoming criminals.
“Hopefully this will be fast-tracked to the SCOTUS docket.”
Actually I hope not. I think we must endure these state incursions on the 2nd and hope RBG exits. I don’t trust this court with the 2nd. We came very very close to losing it last time.
How are they going to enforce this?
By the south is how it appears to me.
if theyre deemed a threat to themselves or others.
= = =
The fact that I just have a gun makes me a threat to others.
New Mexico has been Californicated.
Dont blame me, I havent voted for a single RAT my entire life! This state would make a great 3rd world banana republic if it wasnt too cold to grow bananas here.
Yup, try enforcing this in Catron County.
I've been a regular donor to his campaigns, (and supplying the Richard Mack Constitutional Sheriff's books to him and his deputies) so maybe he will at least think about it.
Wouldn't hurt if all the rest of the NM Citizens on the ping list did so too.
