Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took a victory lap on Twitter Thursday over news that Amazon is scrapping its plan to build a new headquarters in Queens.
Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazons corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world, she tweeted.
The freshman Democratic lawmaker had been a vocal opponent of the deal to lure the online retail giant to Long Island City which wouldve given Amazon $3 billion in city and state subsidies in exchange for bringing a projected 25,000 jobs to the area.

Are they truly subsidies where a check is written to a company? Or on the other hand a situation where the government doesnt collect some tax? That's what I was thinking...not to mention the NYC and NYS taxes these jobs would generate, as well as all the secondary spending benefits those jobs would bring to the local economy.

AOC is more partial to the city of SF, than to NYC. As such, her next proposal will be for a "Brown New Deal" for SF.

I thought restaurants were leaving because of the demographic changes in my town. Now I’m wondering if the dynamics you’re mentioning were at play also.

I’m in CA as well. The House is being Listed in two weeks and hopefully it will sell quickly. Then we are out of here.
After living here for over 60 Years, they have succeeded in driving me out. I am now a stranger in a strange land.

In the real world cities, states, and countries offer incentives and advantages to attract new businesses. It is the way the game is played. Getting on ones moral high horse is a losing proposition. For example, there are reasons why many businesses relocate from CA to TX.

Relatives of mine opened a gourmet restaurant in a tres wealthy suburb of Chicago. Things changed...and they finally shuttered their thriving business.
What changed? Even the rich aren't eating OUT much anymore. They're eating home-cooked or tasty delivered meals in the comfort of their homes....why go out after dark, in the cold, perhaps unsafe streets. Business falls off...and the restaurants close their doors.
TAPROOT (acronym for "Traditions and Principles Republicans Often Overlook Today")....a long-time, influential conservative organization in affluent GOP DuPage County, Illinos (of which I was a founder many, many decades ago) just recently folded. Why? Folks don't want to attend night organization/club meetings anymore.
Sad, but true....this is what's happening.
Amazon has a custom made modus operandi for its products - with fast home delivery right to the door...and today's purchasers never have to leave home to purchase almost anything!
Retail stores and shops are finding it harder and harder to compete with the giant Amazon company....and things are just going to get worse.

This is so beautiful.
Ocasio-Cortez (D-Insane); stabbing Cuomo and De Blasio in the back on their ‘taxpayers expense’ election PR.
This is the best thing to happen so far in 2019.

She just made enemies of Cuomo and DeBlasio.
They’ll manage to do her in one way or another.

3 billion for 25,000 jobs is $120,000 per job. Most of the subsidies are scams on the taxpayer.
Over how many years, or is that figure annual (doubtful)?
If that's an absolute number, which it seems to be from news reports, then, say, over 10 years it comes to $12K / job, which would yield an enormous return for the city in taxes, economic activity, etc., not to mention all associated economic activity and jobs to support those Amazon workers and infrastructure.
And if so, it's plain dumb of NYC and its plainly dumb Representative from the Bronx (via Westchester County).

Thanks Leni.
Is this just our age group though?
Younger people still like to go out. Dont 30 and 40 somethings still like to?

Maybe they will reconsider NC? NOT! We here in Raleigh and the surrounding Burbs have seen housing costs already go through the roof and our roads becoming little Atlanta or LA.Where I live in western part of NC, it's dirt cheap. As long as you don't live in Asheville, No One, Charlotte, Raleigh and Wilmington, the cost of living is real cheap and quite laid back.
