California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that the state will no longer pursue plans to build an estimated $77 billion high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco because the project "would cost too much and respectfully take too long," per the AP.
The big picture: The project was years behind schedule with an estimated completion date of 2033. It had been hamstrung by political backlash in the state, and polling showed that a majority of Californians disapproved of the plan as costs ballooned.
Similar proposals for high-speed trains on the East Coast, including along the heavily trafficked Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., and Boston, have also fallen apart due to opposition and massive cost estimates, per the New York Times.
They should send an invoice to Jerry Brown.
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that the state will no longer pursue plans to build an estimated $77 billion high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco”
The politicians who promoted funding for supposed “high speed rail” never planned to complete the project. The plan was simply to issue billions of dollars in bonds and get billions of dollars of federal money. Democrat politicians have either stolen or wasted billions of dollars already. There is no plan to return any of the billions of dollars to taxpayers.
Think Newsome can use the money he saves by not burning it in the high speed firepit and use it to burn in the black reparations firepit. The priority with radical lefty Dems is to waste money and what they waste it on is of minor import.
He’s keeping the train between Bakersfield and Merced. So we won’t need to use a plane between those two points. Maybe AOC will settle for that.
Ten to twenty billion dollars too late...
Probably the only thing hell do in eight years that Ill agree with.
So that was the plan.
while I doubt I will like much of anything more Newsom might do as Governor of the Once-great State of Californication,
THIS is a BIG WIN!
Good for Newsom, Great for Californication!
Well, that’s $10 BILLION flushed down the Democrat crapper. I wonder what else we could have used that $10 BILLION on. Preventing forest fires? Strengthening decayed dams? Locking up illegals and deporting them? Rebuilding our incredibly crappy and crumbling roads? Getting the statewide hispanic graffiti problem under control?
In December 2018, the Hoover Institution said we had spent $5.4 Billion on it. I seriously doubt that number. Plus, all the contracts will have HUGE cancellation costs and the 5.4 number probably doesn’t count all the huge costs incurred by local governments all over the state doing planning, feasibility work, environmental work.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find the whole thing cost us $15 billion in the end.
I want to congratulate the governor.
His “never” completion date is far ahead of my projected completion date for this pathetic boondoggle. ;-)
Trump should claw back every federal dollar.
This SHOULD have been a construction picture of the foundation of the wall on the southern border.
RE: I wonder what else we could have used that $10 BILLION on.
We could have given it to Trump and build the Border Wall...
an interstate highway along the border would be nice
Cant wait to see what the fares will be for the approximately ten people per day who will ride that route.
RE: So what does California have to show for the BILLIONS already spent? And what will they do with those abandoned parts?
Keep it for AOC’s Green New Deal High Speed Rail Project to replace all airplanes /s
Yup, yup, yup—beauty ain’t it?
Mongo say ...”but where will choo choo go?”
Gosh, who would have guessed?
So....how many tens of billions of dollars did California Taxpayers waste on this boondoggle?
Newsom has scaled back the plan to a rail line between Merced and Bakersfield - not that anyone in those communities asked him for a rail line. Newsom also said he plans to keep the $3.5 billion in federal funds California has already gotten.
“THIS is a BIG WIN!
Good for Newsom, Great for Californication!”
Over $10 billion allocated to this project has been wasted or stolen by the Democrat politicians who run California.
And there is absolutely nothing to show for it.
Democrat politicians won. Taxpayers lost big.
yes ... a whole lot of scam and corruption
but at least THIS version of the theft... is done!
I thought the political basturds would keep the SuperTrain scam going .. milk it more and more...
(not to be too cynical but they must have another, replacement.. big huge scam ready to roll out on us? these corrupt politicians are as hungry for our taxpayer blood as Audrey the Venus FlyTrap in Little Shop of Horrors)
