EARL CARROLLS VANITIES OF 1932: I GOTTA RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES
This is a hair-raising performance from one of the greatest jazz singers in the game. Sassy in this recording is backed by Count Basie. She tears this one right out of her soul, and Basies band is right there with her with some amazing musicianship. When she goes down into her bass register at the end, it gets downright scary. This is a landmark recording.

This is a different side of Sam Cooke, and you can see how, had he lived, he would have given Sinatra a run for his money.

Heres the one filmed at Lumahai Beach. I saw that film at a drive-in theater in 1960. We watched it from our 1958 Edsel Villager station wagon.

EARL CARROLLS VANITIES OF 1932: I GOTTA RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES
This is Ella in 1961 in the studio backed by Billy May. Her perfect diction highlights Ted Koehlers lyrics, and the Big Band arrangement is a killer.

Thank God Frank didnt record this in the Axel Stordahl era of the Forties when Axel would have drowned him in a syrupy string arrangement! This is from 1962 and the end of Franks years at Capitol. Skip Martin is his arranger, and its pure Las Vegas.
