Bill calls for carbon-free electricity in NM by 2045 (Power by sun, wind, rainbows & unicorn farts)

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham threw her support behind a comprehensive energy bill Thursday that could pave the way to a 100 percent carbon-free electric grid in New Mexico by 2045.

Senate Bill 489, co-sponsored by Democratic lawmakers Mimi Stewart and Jacob Candelaria in the Senate and Nathan Small in the House, sets aggressive requirements for public utilities to acquire renewable resources over the next 20 years while eliminating all carbon-emitting generation.

It also authorizes the use of bonds for Public Service Co. of New Mexico to pay for costs associated with closing the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station near Farmington by 2022, and for pulling out of the nearby Four Corners Power Plant by 2031. The bonds would be paid for by customers through a surcharge on their bills.

Overall, SB 489, officially called the “Energy Transition Act,” creates a pathway for New Mexico to replace coal and other fossil fuel-based generation with a clean energy economy over the next 25 years, the governor said. “…The renewable and zero-carbon standards outlined in this bill are among the strongest in the country.”

In particular, the bill would require public utilities to derive 50 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2030, and 80 percent by 2040. They would completely eliminate carbon-emitting generation by 2045, relying on new technologies such as battery storage systems to make up the difference.

Those goals drew broad support from environmental groups.

“In general, the bill puts us on the same track as California to a 100 percent carbon-free energy economy by 2045, ” said Camilla Fiebelman, director of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter. “But in California’s case, that’s an aspirational goal. In our case, it’s a mandate.”

I already have plans on how to build a waste oil, wood pallet and junk mail burning boiler for my steam driven generator.

have you applied for a carbon emission permit for it yet? They are expensive and rare ...

There’ll be no excuse for any Republican failure to remind New Mexico voters about how global warming junk science is raising their electricity costs. They need to get mean about this. And fund sound-science groups.

New Mexico is not a rich state, but it could be doing a lot better. Unfortunately the government is hurting development the most. New Mexico outside Santa Fe and Albuquerque is lower middle class at best, with a lot of poverty in the small towns.

These energy policies in blue states will cause a lot of migration to red states.

I’m looking for funding to study how smart phones and social media cause global warming - not carbon, SUVs, cows, and coal. If my theory and climate model are validated, I will call for a complete worldwide ban of smart phones and social media platforms. Immediately. To save the planet.

Heard a call in on Rush I think from NM saying something like solar is not efficient in NM, but is more efficient in Midwest - that may be, but in the Midwest solar on the roof means a leaky roof .

I doubt that. New Mexico has a lot of sunshine. The only thing that would concern me about solar panels there would be the dust.

What would it take to produce, through solar, all the energy needs of the US? Estimates say that to produce the US electricity demand of 3.7 million Gwh per year, you’d need about 48,000 square kilometers of solar sites. The cost of all those solar cells? The cost of maintenance (cleaning, breakage etc)? What would that do to energy costs? What about the jobs lost by the petrochemical labor force?

Some say they would be put on rooftops. That would increase the cost of installation as well as rooftop safety problems.

What about battery storage for night time supply? Batteries add to the costs and have a limited lifespan.

The Greenies are forgetting the practicals in implementing their green Utopia.

If implemented, this will so wreck the NM economy that the cartels will be able to buy it cheap, and the remaining Americans can just drug themselves to death.

NM must be going 100% nuclear, as there is no other way to achieve that goal.
