These swaths of San Francisco will be underwater in just 70 years, models suggest

In 70 years, San Francisco as we know it could look drastically different. Gentrification, development and the other forces of urban change we fret about may be mere trifles compared to the drastic effects of climate change, including the rise of sea levels and erosion, scientists say.

By 2100, rising sea levels could displace more than 480,000 people along the California coast and result in property losses upwards of $100 billion if no preventative measures are taken, according to a 2009 study by the California Climate Change Center.

The study found populations in the San Francisco Bay Area are especially vulnerable, as are people of color and low-income communities.

The projections represent a worst-case scenario for the city and represent how the landscape would look if there were no efforts to stave off the rising sea or to stem erosion. Nonetheless, as climate change accelerates, the NOAA models could prove true. Some models estimate the sea will rise by 4.60 feet in the next 100 years - nearly seven times the rate of the 20th century.

In San Francisco, tourist attractions like Fisherman's Wharf, Crissy Field and the Palace of Fine Arts will be lost to the sea, as will the Salesforce Tower, the Google offices, the San Francisco and Oakland Airports and the Ferry Building, according to the Climate Central models.

The big one will hit before. Then all bets are off.

It don’t matter. We are only going to be here 12, well 11 3/4 years anyway. Climate change is going to get us. This is straight from the horse’s ass, er mouth.

”These swaths of San Francisco will be underwater in just 70 years...”

Much of San Francisco inside the bay, was built on landfill. When the Earth Quake hits these mud flats will fluidize and all their buildings will sink into the bay.

Orrr... it could not.

But if I wanted to make a ridiculous prediction, I would predict it happening a long time from now too.

I’ll start worrying when they are growing wheat in Greenland again.

Remember the old song from Shango back around 1969?
“Where can you go,
When there’s no
San Francisco.
Better get ready,
To tie up the boat,
In Idaho.

"Thank Goodness the streets will finally be cleaned."

I was thinking the same thing. Finally, the human feces, the two legged variety, and their actual crap, will be washed away.

Wow.

I just came from the city and the water looks to be about the same level as it was 55 years ago, when I was born....

Pacifica isn’t flooding either....

Heck, my office in San Leandro feels pretty safe as well...

I took THE PROGRESSIVE FARMER magazine from 1960 till a few years ago. In the mid 1970s, this magazine warned how crops grown in Illinois would now be grown in the Deep South due to THE COMING ICE AGE in the northern states.

A few years ago, this same magazine was warning of “Glo-Bull Warming!”

So I cancelled my subscription after fifty five years.

Or they could wake up some morning to find people ice skating on Frisco Bay. I live 200 miles north on Humboldt Bay and my question to this crowd is how much has the ocean risen 20 years and I get no answer...

Well then, in 70 years it’s possible the streets will finally be washed clean of human feces. Maybe.

But that assumes that the earth is not destroyed from global warming in 12 years. Better check with Occasional Cortex, she’s the expert.

Over 70 years? You’d think they could get out of the
way by then.

Solution: Buy land in Texas.

When people migrant from the coastal areas inland, a huge profit can be made for land owners.
