Dame Julie Andrews’s performance as Mary Poppins is racist, says a US academic who accuses her of ‘blacking up’ when her face is covered with soot as she dances with chimney sweeps.
The scene in which Poppins joins Dick Van Dyke’s Bert and his fellow sweeps on a rooftop for the song Step In Time is one of the best-loved moments in the 1964 Disney classic.
But writing in the New York Times under the headline ‘Mary Poppins, and a Nanny’s Shameful Flirting With Blackface,’ Professor Daniel Pollack-Pelzner attacks the scene. Not surprisingly, the film’s legions of devoted fans have reacted with disbelief.
The literature professor acknowledges that Poppins’s face is covered with soot because she has gone up the chimney with her charges, Michael and Jane Banks.

Mary Poppins is a kind of angel. She has no connection to evil. She treats the chimney sweeps - often Irish - with warmth and respect, as they are hard-workers. The blackface and reference to Hottentots is not intended to be evil, but is poking fun at an person whose buffoonery is tolerated because of his age and years of honorable service. He is a member of the family and not sent away to a nursing home. In this story, a proper English family interacts positively with others of various backgrounds and socio-economic conditions. Nobody is lynched or denied entrance into schools for which they are qualified. But, some people want to hold on to racism. We can suppose this is to soothe their own sense of grievance and to justify their own pathetic lives.
And they call this clown a “professor”? I wouldn’t be surprised if they also paid him “beaucoup bucks” too.
Hope his children kill with broomsticks and shove his body down an unused chimney, and then go back and watch “Mary Poppins” a dozen times, laughing all the while.
