On New Years Day this year, I predicted in a column published here that under pressure of various governmental investigations, Donald Trump will be compelled to resign from the presidency before the end of 2019. The recent disclosures regarding these investigations have strengthened my position.
Upon Trumps resignation from the presidency, Vice President Mike Pence will become the president. Pence, however, will be a very poor reelection prospect in 2020.
Mike and Karen Pence, his wife, have a well-deserved reputation for extremism on social issues, particularly on issues affecting gay and lesbian voters. The Pences possess a kook factor they wont be able to shake loose due to their advocacy of far-right social issue positions.
So the search will be on for an alternative 2020 Republican presidential candidate to Mike Pence. Given the ability of the Trump base to veto any such alternative, the Pence opponent must not be somebody identified as a Trump adversary. That rules out former Ohio Gov. John Kasich or Nebraska U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse.
The Republican who will emerge as the opponent to Pence will be none other than former Gov. Chris Christie, a man of irrepressible ambition who has never relinquished his presidential aspirations. And his service in the 2016 Trump campaign ensures his acceptability to the Trump base.
In case youre wondering, this is not an endorsement. If youve read my commentary before, you know that no New Jersey Republican criticized both Christies tenure as governor and his failed 2016 presidential run more vehemently than I.
Yet, I must be dispassionate and divorce my personal views of Christie from any assessment as to his past performance and his future viability as a candidate for the White House.

Christie is too close to Whitman, Kean, Frelinghuysen, lance and other RINO's. He will never win.
Alan J. Steinberg served as regional administrator of Region 2 EPA during the administration of President George W. Bush and as executive director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission under Gov. Christie Whitman. A former adjunct professor of political science at Monmouth University and St. Peters University, hes a frequent political commentator on NJTV and News 12.
Hahahahahahhaaaaaaa. You have to be kidding me. Hahahahaaaaahahahahhhhhaaa.
Christie’s chance of being elected president at any time is slightly lower than mine ... remarkable considering I don’t plan to run for any office.
That is if he doesn’t drop.
Christie is one delusional fat man.
And, to think I was once a fan of his. He now makes me puke. He’s nothing but an ego driven, disloyal jack@ss.
"A fat slob from New Jersey has no chance of getting elected president in this country."

President Pence will be challenged in 2020 by obama-hugging Chris Christie
fixed
Who will remember him???
Alan Steinberg, please put the crack pipe down and seek help...God Loves You.
John Paul 2 spoke of it, but I was just a little kid:
“A culture of Death”
I wondered what the Pope was talking about.
But now I don’t wonder AT ALL.
Misread it. Thought it was referring to 2024.
You need to get a real job Homer. This psychic gig ain’t working.
Christie has pizazz though and he seems likeable. Pence seems like a robot. I don’t buy the premise of Trump resigning, but if he wins re-election, which is far from certain, then I think there will be a ton of Republicans running alongside Pence and I do expect one will be Christie. His kids (whose baby sitter I know) will be much older by then. It’ll be a much more easy transition.
Attention star ledger. You mean 2024. Not 2020. Besides, by 2024 CC may be gone due to donuticide.
That corrupt tub of goo with a loud mouth might have played well in Jersey for a short while but he’s toxic outside the northeast. Good luck with that one.
NJ is a POS state regardless of radical Dims or Fake GOPers
And Fakes posing as editorialists
Quite a scenario. Pence would score an overwhelming win!
Its amazing how delusional people can be. As to the author, what recent disclosures are those. I follow politics as obsessively as anyone on this forum, yet I literally have no idea what he is talking about. As to potential challengers like Romney, Christie, and Kasick, Im convinced that they only read WaPo and NYT, and have no idea how much of the base just despises them
LOTS of wishful thinking in this article.
