On New Years Day this year, I predicted in a column published here that under pressure of various governmental investigations, Donald Trump will be compelled to resign from the presidency before the end of 2019. The recent disclosures regarding these investigations have strengthened my position.
Upon Trumps resignation from the presidency, Vice President Mike Pence will become the president. Pence, however, will be a very poor reelection prospect in 2020.
Mike and Karen Pence, his wife, have a well-deserved reputation for extremism on social issues, particularly on issues affecting gay and lesbian voters. The Pences possess a kook factor they wont be able to shake loose due to their advocacy of far-right social issue positions.
So the search will be on for an alternative 2020 Republican presidential candidate to Mike Pence. Given the ability of the Trump base to veto any such alternative, the Pence opponent must not be somebody identified as a Trump adversary. That rules out former Ohio Gov. John Kasich or Nebraska U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse.
The Republican who will emerge as the opponent to Pence will be none other than former Gov. Chris Christie, a man of irrepressible ambition who has never relinquished his presidential aspirations. And his service in the 2016 Trump campaign ensures his acceptability to the Trump base.
In case youre wondering, this is not an endorsement. If youve read my commentary before, you know that no New Jersey Republican criticized both Christies tenure as governor and his failed 2016 presidential run more vehemently than I.
Yet, I must be dispassionate and divorce my personal views of Christie from any assessment as to his past performance and his future viability as a candidate for the White House.

Bingo. I detest disloyalty. Whatever other faults Christie may have, THIS is the one that makes him a non-starter for me.
Christie has a big ego. So does Trump, but Trump gets things done. Christie should just go away. He is a waste of time.
Which proves he drank the water in New Jersey...along with the millions of other obnoxious losers!
Chris Christie could win in 2024
But the Bridgegate scandal could damage Christie in 2024
I hope in 2024 Greg Abbott is the nominee and not Pence.
And, to think I was once a fan of his. He now makes me puke. Hes nothing but an ego driven, disloyal jack@ss.
Ditto.
ML/NJ
Whitman, Kean, Frelinghuysen, lance, bramnick are the only Republicans that can win in NJ.
Period.
Stay Puft ain’t gonna win squat. He can go back to smooching Stephen Colbert.
I mean what kind of guy lives his whole life in the home of the New York Giants, and roots for the Cowboys?
All of the aforementioned facts about this butt wipe and NJTV and News 12 are prime examples of the liberal and RINO scum that infests my state.
People let me tell you 'bout my best friend, He's a warm hearted person who'll love me till the end. People let me tell you bout my best friend, He's a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.
Pence is a good social conservative, but social conservatism is declining in America.
People like Adam Rippon and others will not allow Pence to get in.
Pence is somewhat lackluster.
America is turning socially liberal. It’s not the 1980s anymore.
“The recent disclosures regarding these investigations have strengthened my position. “
What’s this jerk talking about?
Ceding social values to the evil left isn’t right.
He might as well have predicted that the sun won't come up tomorrow. Just as likely.
Iffa', coulda', woulda', shoulda' but ain't ever going to happen.
Other than taking NJ in the primary....there’s virtually no other state that would be potentially pro-Christie.
Oh noes! It’s another “this is the end of Trump” article!
The drug-fueled fantasies have moved on so far into the virtual future that they’ve left the planet if not galaxy.
