The White House said on Friday night that Donald Trump will "move forward" with funding for a wall along the southern border "with our without the Democrats."
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee tweeted the warning while she defended the president against conservative criticism that he caved on wall funding in order to end the shutdown.
The president refused to characterize the deal as a "concession":
For weeks, Trump said he would not sign a funding measure that did not include money for a border wall.
At various points he suggested that he would declare a national emergency to circumvent Congress to build a border wall, but resisted taking such a move, which would surely prompt legal challenges.
The president indicated Friday that if lawmakers do not offer funding for a wall when the three-week measure ends on Feb. 15, another shutdown could begin or he could declare an emergency to build the wall.
Well work with the Democrats and negotiate, and if we cant do that, then well do a obviously well do the emergency because thats what it is. Its a national emergency, Trump told reporters in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.
Trump's announcement that he would sign a temporary spending bill without securing money for a border wall was met with backlash from conservatives, with immigration hard-liner Ann Coulter calling him the biggest wimp ever to serve as president.
So did Trump cave to the Democrats or is he playing possum? CNN has been reporting all week that the White House has been working on declaring a national emergency and would get funds to build the wall from various government sources, including the military.
What sounded like a contingency plan has taken on a new significance with the president's recent statements.
The president made his remarks during a White House event with Hispanic pastors on Friday to discuss the importance of security on the Southern border.
Earlier Friday, Trump specified that he would reopen the government for three weeks to give negotiators more time to work out a border security compromise. A bipartisan committee will work together with the Department of Homeland Security to come up with a border security package for the president to sign.
The president was still adamant about funding more physical barriers on the border.
If we dont have that wall and we dont have a very powerful barrier, its all just a waste of time, he wrote. It cant work. Cant work. So well get it.
Huckabee's question to Democrats about whether they want "something or nothing" is pertinent. Pelosi has scored her political points and, if she was smart, she would walk away from the table.
But that would cause howls of outrage from #theresistance. Trump must not only be beaten, but he must also be stomped. The anti-Trump hysteria of Democrats may play into Trump's hands by forcing Pelosi to stand firm against any wall funding, allowing Trump to delight conservatives by declaring a national emergency on the border.
Trump's so-called cave-in to Democrats was only round one. Round two may be even more interesting -- and contentious.
“if he can move forward with or without them, what the heck is the point in going through all of this nonsense?”
How can Trump claim in court that there’s a national emergency at the border if congress has voted that there isn’t?
This is just ginned up speech to calm the base. He knows the wall is going nowhere..... or he would have just built the damn thing already and dared the senate to remove him.
Perhaps what you say Steely Tom.
My own humble opinion, after decades of congress shirking its constitutional duties to the executive branch, and the executive branch trashing the constitution, POTUS Trump is trying to restore the constitutional system to what it should be, not lead by fiat and emotion. Its a fine line to walk as the system is so broken and the foundation on which it is built, a moral society, is so far gone.
i.e. For the entire Obama residency, there was not a budget. Trump got congress to pass a budget, albeit not a perfect one, but it broke the cycle of CR’s.
I think Trump knows he will have to invoke some emergency executive powers to secure the border, but he also knows the danger of exercising a power that could be used against us by a future POTUS if another leftist wins the presidency. So he is bending over backwards to find solutions that don’t go down the slippery slope.
Trouble is, as I have said in other posts, if we don’t secure our border and stop illegal voting, we wont have a country to save. And Trump knows this as well.
Time is wasting. Get on with it.
STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND DO IT!
And shopping for a ref (judge) they own for the second half.
Congress (House and Senate) hasn’t voted there isn’t an emergency. And it wont because its so divided it cant, in the sense of passing any law. The house can grand stand, that’s it.
Problem with congress is that with it so divided (in part by rat election cheating), grid lock is here for the duration. No legislative movement one way or the other. In a more sane time, this might be a good thing. But the pendulum has swung so far toward insanity, that action is necessary in the name of survival.
Here’s a hint: Lots of us aren’t impressed if he’s putting the next election ahead of what best for US citizens. Here’s another hint: You think maybe one factor in losing some of those House seats was the Wall wasn’t started yet?
I hope you’re right, but, as a former commander once told me, “Hope is not a strategy.” Trump was winning the PR side of the shutdown and gaining more support each time he offered a concession and the Pelosi/Schumer show rejected each concession out of hand.

His only option to go it “alone” is by exercising his Article 2 emergency powers and re-allocating unobligated military construction funding (which does not, by the way, mean that Army engineer units will be building the wall). However, Jared Kushner has strongly advised Trump not to exercise his emergency powers. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see who carries the day, we the American voters or Trump’s progressive son-in-law.

Not sure about this -— the problem was getting dire with the Coast Guard and Air Traffic Control being affected. Flights were already being delayed because of this.
We really need to designate the Coast Guard as ESSENTIAL because they are. They should not be held hostage to any shutdown.
As for Air Traffic Control, PRIVATIZE IT like most other countries have done ( including Canada ).
One thing that came of this: democrats can never again run on lies about being in favor of a strong border. Republicans aren’t for it either but they can still lie about it with a straight face. The democrats made it clear and public finally: they want no border at all.
The population 18 and over as of 2017 is 252million. Just FYI
Well... what I think got exposed were the number of republicans in the Senate that didn’t back the president.
RE: You think maybe one factor in losing some of those House seats was the Wall wasnt started yet?
If this is so, Then the American voters are more stupid than I thought.
How will voting for Democrats and Not Republicans ( who actually VOTED TO FUND THE WALL before the end of 2018 ) get us the wall? That’s like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.
My guess is this — there are not enough motivated voters in this country who care one whit about illegal immigration.
Elections come down to which base is more energized.
With all due respect PDJT, give your speeches after work hours when people can relax in their homes and watch you.
Congress hasn’t. Congress won’t. It will be the easiest thing in the world to prove in court there is a national emergency at the southern border.
Remember what Reagan did when the air traffic controllers chose not to go to work?
