In GOP upset, Kelli Ward to lead Arizona Republican Party

Failed U.S. Senate candidate Kelli Ward, a conservative firebrand, will lead the Arizona Republican Party through the 2020 election.

In a contentious three-way race for AZGOP chair, Ward came out on top Saturday, defeating incumbent chairman Jonathan Lines.

Meanwhile, Arizona Democrats opted to retain their party chairwoman, Felecia Rotellini to another two-year term.

Republican losses in the 2018 election were a common refrain throughout the AZGOP state committee meeting Saturday at Phoenix’s Church for the Nations.

Prior to the election, Republicans held all statewide elected offices, a majority of the congressional seats and majorities in both chambers of the Legislature.

Although Republicans kept their legislative majorities, Democrats picked up four seats in the House — bringing the chamber to a 31-29 split. Democrats also won four statewide elections and a majority of Arizona’s nine congressional seats.

Ward, a former state senator, placed the blame squarely on Lines, of Yuma.

“I was with you on Election Day and after, sharing the heartbreak with you of the crushing defeats we had across Arizona despite historic unprecedented efforts,” Ward said

The status quo isn’t good enough, she said. And echoing comments U.S. Sen. Martha McSally made earlier in the meeting, Ward said, “we need to do better.” McSally, though, was talking about Republican election performance as a whole and not specifically about Lines.

Something similar occurred here in MA just over a week ago, with the MA GOP Chair race.

Two candidates, with the anointed one, a Baker (Dem, MA) stooge, supposed to win, claiming he had locked up 45 votes (needed 41).
He was previously the MA GOP treasurer, who oversaw the gov-centric flow of campaign funds with none to great R candidates down-ballot.

Trump-supporting, pro-life conservative Jim Lyons won 47 to 27.

I was hoping Ward would have been appointed to follow John Kyl. But, maybe she can fire people up and stop the slide towards blue state ruination.

These state and county chair positions are important for 2020 GOTV, and replacing establishment picks with Trump loyalists is an essential ingredient.

I hear ya! We are holding fast here in Idaho. But it's a battle that many don't understand yet.

More..ever wonder how the MSM has continued to claim AZ as a toss up the last couple elections? Because they know that the demonrats have transfered nearly enough scum into the conservative states to swing them.

Interesting.

I hope she’s better at this behind the scenes role than she was at being a Senate candidate.

This should be very interesting. The biggest critique against her in previous elections was that while she spoke a good game, she was inexperienced, with no track record to build confidence.

As chair of the AZ GOP, she will have a lot of work to do, cleaning up after the messes left by McCain and Flake. But if she can, in an acceptable manner, she will have cleared the path for her next election try.

The battle over the wall was one of those skirmishes.

Better get voter fraud under control!

I dunno. I get the impression that a lot of older folks are conservative but too many vote D to keep the benefits rolling.
