They went to Mexico for surgery. They came back with a deadly superbug.

They wiggle one tooth and they charge for an exam. You ask one question and they charge for a consultation. They take an X-ray of one tooth and don’t even tell you what it showed and charge you for an X-ray.

If you complain, they actually say “All dentists do this.”

Yes! They do! Take it off my bill! I got my bill reduced to just the cleaning by making a royal fuss.

Had implant done. Cost $5,000. Insurance covered $1,800. Paid the rest. Work done by, paid for and appreciated by an American. Buena suerte in Mexico.

After all the work Betsy McCaughey has done on this problem, it still exists (although it is better).

It’s the reason doctors will not recommend any minor surgery in a hospital unless it is severely impacting your quality of life. You have to live with your minor ailments that could be easily fixed with a little treatment. The chance of an infection may be small, but the bad outcomes are a nightmare.

The pricing of services reflects differences in costs of doing business in Mexico vs. America.

For example, the American dentist has to pay much higher rent than the Mexican. American dentist is compelled to pay the hired helped far more per hour than Mexico. Workman’s comp, health insurance, and payroll taxes are higher. Malpractice insurance requirements are likely more stringent in America than Mexico.

So there are many reasons, why dental care would cost more on this side of the border. It is not simply a matter of the American dentists not pricing their services competitively.

And rent!

I am well aware of the fact that a doctor’s or dentist’s office is a business as well as a health resource. Some of them are just getting by.

We can help by trying not to cost them more money than we have to, not canceling appointments, understanding if the visit is as short as possible, etc.

But the dentists are overchargers.

Depends on the tequila. Bad tequila is poison. Good tequila is a pleasure. Really good tequila is transcendental.

I would just say, that we can’t say they are overchargers, without knowing their business model, expenses, break even points, etc. And also, who decides what their net profit for any procedure should be. Bureaucracy?

Shop around and see what the going rate is for various procedures. That is true of dentistry or any other goods and services.
