He claimed he was a Recon Ranger there is no such thing as a Marine Recon Ranger, Rangers are in the Army.
Retired US Navy SEAL Don Shipley, who is known for publicly outing people for stolen valor, obtained Nathan Phillips DD-214 form and exposed the truth.
Nathan Phillips was enlisted under the name Nathaniel Richard Stanard.
Nathaniel Phillips enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves on May 20th, 1972 and served until May 5th, 1976, Don Shipley said as he read the DD-214 form.
He served under just four years and was discharged at the exalted rank of Private' Shipley said sarcastically.
Shipley continued, His entire military education was as a basic electrician in the Marine Corps while he served in Lincoln, Nebraska, he served as a refer mach.
Nathan Phillips went AWOL THREE TIMES while he was stationed at El Toro Marine Base in Southern California, according to his DD-214 form.

Thanks so much for finding and posting this information. Now this character will slither away into obscurity, and the Leftist Loonies will glom onto the next Outrage! (tm) until it is shown as a fraud. Rinse, Repeat. I don’t understand how any decent, thinking person can vote Democrat any more, and for a looooong time.
I suspect the real story is better than that. He went to basic over the summer while in high school. He then went to AIT the next summer. A few months after that, he ended up on active duty for 2 years at El Toro . I think that a possible penalty for screwing up in the reserves is to be forced to do 2 years on active duty(the early '70's is before my time and they had different rules, but I knew a guy who got out of a commission as a 2nd lt. by doing a 2 year enlistment). He has several UA's listed on his dd-214 while on active duty at El Toro. This would explain his E-1 status at ETS as he probably lost some ranks for his UA's. It doesn't look like his service in the USMC was particularly remarkable.
How many days of active duty would you estimate he did before going back home as a drilling reservist?

Thank you, Piasa.
I’m learning to try to stop and consider whether or not what I’m about to post in our battles against the evil we see at any given moment, is fighting a fight the deep state actually WANTS me to fight...
or will whatever I’m considering posting fight the deep state directly and avoid the kind of distractions continuously set out for us.
Because those distractions are at once subtle, purposeful, and legion.
The deep state is delighted as long as we fight each other instead of them.
You do realize the man is not an indian.
it gets even more interesting than that - deserving another mention:

Very good. Thanks.
Have not seen proof of that, no.
Though it would not greatly surprise my cynical mind - those who protest the loudest and all, he’s not my problem.
And not only him, but those who love what he’s done and were hoping for violence were soundly defeated this round.
The lesson I see in the MAGA Kids is get out there and ignore the violent and hateful desires and distractions of the idiots. Focus on beating back The BIG Lie. Like they did.
Thus beating not only the idiots, but their masters as well.
Much bigger impact.
We need more of this.

It seems the truth finally got it’s pants on.
“...the man [Nathan Phillips] is not an Indian.”
I’ve heard it said that he is a member of the Omaha tribe, but I have not seen any evidence presented either way. Why do you say that?
And it took kids to get the Truth out of bed.
Member of the Omaha Steaks tribe ...
Just another Ward Churchill!! AWOL THREE TIMES??? What a LOSER CREEP!
HONORABLE Discharge?? After going AWOL THREE TIMES?? OMG...the military is NOT what I thought it was.
If Ward Churchill and Elizabeth Warren had a baby...
Well, if he’s not, (like the Italian in your picture) and he wants to self identify as an Indian, he can take that up with whatever tribe he claims.

He was supposedly taken from his mother by the courts at the age of five (I assume because of neglect) and brought up by a white family. He seems to have joined the Marines at the age of 17, which means he was waivered in, something that often occurred because of adolescent discipline problems.
It sounds like his whole life he has been kind of a mess, and this Indian gig is his way of dealing with it.
This is from his speech at Arlington in 2008’
“Phillips also described coming back to the U.S. as a veteran from Vietnam. People called me a baby killer and a hippie girl spit on me.
