Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) returned to "The Late Show" with Stephen Colbert Monday night, explaining how the partial government shutdown has affected her personally. "It gives us a lot more free time to make trouble," she said.
"Your first day in Congress -- government's shut down. What the -- what heck is that like?" Colbert asked her, as they ate ice cream together.
"I mean, basically, it's like -- well, what I will say is that there are a lot of things we can't do as freshman members. We have almost -- around 100 new members of both parties that are coming to Congress, and we can't properly set up our district offices, we can't get laptops delivered, we can't start doing the work that we're elected to do."
"It takes the green stuff," Colbert interjected.
"Yeah, and those workers are furloughed," Ocasio-Cortez said. "So the down side is that we're not able to get to work as much as we want to in the beginning, but the bright side is that it gives us a lot more free time to make trouble."
(The audience laughed and cheered.)
"Because, you know what they say, idle hands are the devil's legislative agenda," Colbert joked.
"That is right. That is exactly correct," Ocasio-Cortez said.
Ocasio Cortez then discussed some of her recent trouble-making. She said she wanted to "find the person responsible" for the partial government funding lapse -- whom she identified as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, because he refuses to bring up spending bills that President Trump won't sign.
"It's literally just Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell versus the rest of the world," she told Colbert. Ocasio-Cortez and some other freshman Democrats wrote McConnell a letter last week, and they decided to deliver it personally.
"So we're like, we're going to find him," Ocasio-Cortez told Colbert.
"And so we went to his Capitol Hill office, his Senate Majority Leader office, he wasn't there. Then we said, well, let's go everywhere he could possibly be. So we went to the cloak room, which is kind of like a snack room for the Republicans. (Laughter)
"We went to the Senate floor, and Senator Jeff Merkley submitted our letter to the Senate floor. And it was actually, some of the incumbents are saying this is the first time they remember House members going to the Senate floor since about 1992 for the Anita Hill hearings was the last time some of them recall that happening.
"And then we went to his constituent office in the Russell Building, we took the little, like, train that they have...And that's where we started the hashtag #where's Mitch, because where is he?" (Applause)
According to press reports -- this one from Fox News -- "The stunt – dubbed #WheresMitch on social media -- came to an unceremonious and anti-climactic end after the pack first went to the wrong office of McConnell, then delivered the letter to his chief of staff, and ultimately declined to stake out the Senate floor."
Colbert asked the congresswoman if she considered going to the Senate floor and yelling, "Olly, olly, oxen free?"
"That's my plan when I go back," she smiled.

I can see why Democrats believe this bartender is fully-qualified for Congress.

I’m sure the Democrats are adding “Trump” stickers to a van in warehouse somewhere at this moment. They’ll just need one of the off-the-shelf scenarios.
