Poll: A majority of Americans support raising the top tax rate to 70 percent

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(D-N.Y.) and her Republican critics have both called her proposal to dramatically increase America's highest tax rate "radical" but a new poll released Tuesday indicates that a majority of Americans agrees with the idea.

In the latest The Hill-HarrisX survey — conducted Jan. 12 and 13 after the newly elected congresswoman called for the U.S. to raise its highest tax rate to 70 percent — a sizable majority of registered voters, 59 percent, supports the concept.

Ocasio-Cortez has not introduced any legislation to enact the concept but the survey shows a broad cross-section of Americans supports it, at least presently.

Women support the idea by a 62-38 percent margin. A majority of men back it as well, 55 percent to 45 percent. The proposal is popular in all regions of the country with a majority of Southerners backing it by a 57 to 43 percent margin. Rural voters back it as well, 56 percent to 44 percent.

Increasing the highest tax bracket to 70 percent garners a surprising amount of support among Republican voters. In the Hill-HarrisX poll, 45 percent of GOP voters say they favor it while 55 percent are opposed to it.

Independent voters who were contacted backed the tax idea by a 60 to 40 percent margin while Democratic ones favored it, 71 percent to 29 percent.

Ocasio-Cortez is among a group of progressive legislators which includes Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who have called for increasing federal income tax rates on wealthier Americans. The New York Democrat kicked off a debate within her party in a Jan. 6 interview with "60 Minutes" during which she said she would support setting the highest tax, which she said would kick in at individuals 10 millionth dollar of income, at 70 percent.

Even if the poll is incredibly sloppy and wildly inaccurate, it tells us that at last half the country thinks it’s a good idea.

Based on my anecdotal experience the poll is pretty much on-target.

Democrats propose feeding kittens into wood chipper.

According to a Hill/Harris poll 80% support the proposal.

Same ole same ole. Wherever there is a dem proposal or policy, a fake news poll showing the desired results will immediately follow.

A majority of Americans would likely support a wealth tax of 70% on billionaires. The billionaires behind this chick should get it good.

“I am at the young end of the Baby Boom so I might actually have to live through some of this dystopian nightmare.”

We are similar in age. I know I’ll see some bad things, but I’m hoping that I am gone before they get the nerve to come for me. I can see a time when they’ll want my house because it’s too big for my wife and I. They’ll want my savings because it’s more than a couple needs. Those things WILL happen.

I have sat with twenty and thirty plus year-olds with degrees in the financial sector telling me that this is the best idea yet.

they are obedient to their owners, and they have been owned by leftist totalitarians since kindergarten. We have raised an entire generation of leftist fascists.

Yup. Once they pass laws to allow them to take stuff from the Koch Brothers, they can take it from ANY of us.

These dupes don’t seem to realize that.

If the tax is “earmarked” for the Social Security “lockbox”, the fabled one of lore that many Freepers rally to, it will pass with help from this forum.

It is very difficult for a Democracy to avoid taking money from the rich. We are heading for a bi-level society in which a tiny percentage owns almost all wealth and income and the huge majority owns about 1-5%.

Two different worlds.

Tax rates at 70% and above were in effect until JFK cut them.

As far as demographics go, poll seems balanced (whatever that might mean)

65% make less than 100k a year.

37% RAT
32% Repub

Sure, try 70% tax rate. But close all the loopholes. All of em. Make Hollywood feel the burn. They’ll quietly pull their support after one tax season.

The “history of now” that millennials use ignores any effort that was put into gaining assets like a house or bank account.

You have it, and someone who wandered across the border last week doesn’t, and that’s (in best whiny voice) “not fair.”

My suspicion is they will tax us out of our homes. So the lone woman who lives in her inherited family home with three extra bedrooms will get penalized for each until she can’t afford to stay. The UK had something like this called the “bedroom tax.”

Doesn’t concern me at all how rich they are. What concerns me is the influence they have over government. THAT is what need fixing in our(not democracy) republic, not the tax rates. They always make a way for themselves to avoid a large portion of their tax burden - if no other way, by moving off shore. When tax rates go sky high, it is ALWAYS the upper middle class that gets pounded.

High government taxation is just another form of slavery. Rich folks still get rich by selling goods and services to the government. How do you think people in Congress get so filthy rich??? The rest of us become their slaves. Not “No”, but “HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. I have already been slave enough in my lifetime!!!
