When Pope Francis visits Panama this week, he arrives not only as the first Latin American pontiff to visit Central America but as perhaps the world's most prominent advocate for migrants at a time when migration has become a pressing political issue in the region and elsewhere.
The Argentine-born son of Italian immigrants has long held the issue dear to his heart and has signaled that it will be a central theme during the trip, which comes as the latest caravan of Central Americans is wending its way toward the U.S.-Mexico frontier.
Francis' emphasis on fundamental Christian teaching about welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked and feeding the hungry has been a breath of sustenance for those involved in efforts to aid migrants in Central America and Mexico, where Catholic priests, nuns and laypeople have taken the lead on attending to migrants amid what is often a vacuum of inaction and indifference by governments - or even outright hostility.
"It has been so hard, even within the church itself, to convince (people) that helping migrants is precisely part of the work of the church," said Lidia Mara Souza, coordinator of the group Pastoral of Human Mobility in Honduras.
"But the pope has supported us tremendously, and I think now he comes to help us," added Souza, a nun of the Scalabrinian order, which aids migrants as its vocation and is present along the length of the migratory route. "He must remind the politicians who declare themselves to be Christians to be that for real."

Not the godless Soros?
How ‘bout telling them to obey the law and stay home and improve their own countries instead ?
> Not the godless Soros? <
Soros doesn’t have a church to shelter/feed the invaders in every s-hole town along the route from El Salvador to El Paso. The godless Soros just funds the operation.
Il Papa just highlights the issues with allowing furrin immigration into the Vatican, among other geographic entities..
Bergoglio’s hero, Che, was another immigrant.
Instead of enabling “immigrants” to flee their third-world Islamic shitholes, why isn’t the Church interested in fixing those third-world Islamic shitholes so “immigrants” don’t need to flee?
In the US, church operated NGOs get paid settlement fees on a per-head basis.
I didn’t put two and two together on the Mexico route well enough to understand Church involvement. I was just focusing on the buses and the meals on wheels that seem to magically appear, and just looked “left.”
The highest levels of the Catholic church were there on the left. Did you miss them?
the problem with the “goodness” of the pope is that immigrants and socialism are synonymous.
And how many “immigrants” will the Pope offer refuge to in the Vatican. Why that would be zero, same as Springsteen, Bono, Cher, Sting, Clooney, Paris Hilton, Madonna, and EU, UN, Microsoft and airline execs. They don’t want that riff raff around them. That is for the little people.
The problem is that the Pope is “ministering” to Latino sneak-ins and invaders using American taxpayer funds.
Maybe it's time for the Church to start picking up some of that tab.
If this is the new face of the Catholic Church I am done with the idiots.
I wonder if he would pull a stunt like flying to the US border and trying to lead a caravan across into the US?
In the 19th Century the Argentine military formed a skirmish line from the sea to the Andes and began to push the indigenous peoples to the south. Along the way, and through numerous battles the number of locals was greatly reduced, so that today there are damned few of them. Meanwhile, as the nation began to grow economically it welcomed (a la the USA) immigrants from Europe (like Italians and Ashkenazi Jews).
Almost all were welcomed except negros. They were never welcomed and that fact accounts for their small percentage in Argentina. Every nation has its sad tales of inclusion and exclusion, most particularly Argentina. Thus, let us hope the Argentine Pope does not try to lash us with the evils of this political world. After all, the Papacy itself has little to be proud of in that event.
They certainly welcomed Nazis.
