Fact Check: Would Trump’s border wall cost ‘1/10th of 1 percent of the federal budget’?

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed on “Face the Nation” Sunday that the money requested by President Donald Trump to fund a border wall is equal to “1/10th of 1 percent of the federal budget.”

Verdict: True

The $5.7 billion requested for Trump’s border wall amounts to 0.13 percent of the $4.5 trillion in projected federal outlays for fiscal year 2019. It equals 0.42 percent of projected discretionary spending.

Fact Check:

McCarthy made the claim while discussing the partial government shutdown with CBS host Margaret Brennan. “If we cannot do this together, what else can we not do in the future? This is not that big of a problem,” said McCarthy.

The government has been shut down since Dec. 22 after Democrats rejected the White House’s demand for $5 billion in border wall funding. The Republican-led House passed a spending bill that included $5.7 billion for a wall, but the bill did not have the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate.

The Democrats being against the Wall has absolutely nothing to do with the Cost.

who cares what it would cost? it could cost $600 billion dollars and it would still be a massive bargain after the very first year- We are spending north of $600 BILLION DOLLARS every single year on illegals, and all their crime, and secondary costs due to these crimes- (Note DIRECT costs of illegals is around $150 BILLION DOLLARS, but when INDIRECT costs are estimated, the costs go well over $600 BILLION DOLLARS)

The argument that $5 BILLION DOLLARS is ‘too costly’ or ‘a waste of federal dollars’ is asinine and blatantly deceitful- it is far too costly NOT to build a wall- We are spednign over $600 BILLION DOLLARS every single year on illegals-

Republicans could win this showdown VERY easily IF they taught the public that we can not afford to not build the wall- inform the public that we will be saving literally trillions of dollars after just a few years- two infact-

This showdown is is so easy to win- and so easy to prove that not building a wall is immoral, but for some unknown reason, republicans are not making the case that we need a wall- I don’t understand it=- when nancy said it was immoral, the right should have pounced and shamed her for her blatant lie! and proven to the public that the left are so steeped in their hatred of everything trump that they can’t even do basic math!

The math coudl easily put the lie to the claim that $5 BILLION DOLLARS is immoral, is ‘too costly’- Why do republicans refuse to bring out the math? Do they want to lose this showdown?

"The $5.7 billion requested for Trump’s border wall amounts to 0.13 percent of the $4.5 trillion in projected federal outlays for fiscal year 2019."

I've been hoping that the President or some other Republican would bring this fact to the public's attention.

I don't think most Americans have any idea how small the President's request is, in comparison to annual federal spending.

Framing it in this way starkly outlines how petty the Democrats' refusal is.

Adrenochrome.

When importing unwanted orphans really is a matter of life and death, there can be no wall!

To be fair, about half of illegal immigration are visa overstays, which a wall won’t help, but your overall point is valid.

the point is to remove as many illegals as possible build a wall, and the massive savings will pour in- we can’t of course remove all illegals, but we can remove a great many of them- and even if we only were able to remove 1/2, we’d still be saving 50% of $600 billion dollars- We’d still be saving $300 billion dollars every single year- Heck- even if we can only round up 10% and build a wall, we’d still be saving more than $60 billion dollars a year- instead of paying out $600 billion dollars every single year-

A wall is a no brainer- Even if we can only manage to save 1%- that’s still money we are saving, and not paying out $600 billion every year-

But realistically, we can assume we will be able to cut down over 50%- Walls stop over 90% of illegals pouring into the country- Californai put up a wall and stopped around 93% of illegals

But yes, we’d have to remove illegals as well as build a wall in order to get the most savings, but removing illegals shouldn’t be too hard or expensive compared to what illegals are costing us every single year

The follow up question to Pelosi, which no one ever asks her is “How?”

I wish that the Democrats (or even, or especially the Republicans) were so adamant about removing every “wasteful and inefficient” spending item with so few benefits for the cost from the federal spending plan. We quickly might reduce federal spending sufficient to repay the debt.

Whatever it costs, it’d be cheaper than all the friends and family vacations Nancy stuck the taxpayers for.

exactly- it’s funny how quick trhe left are to approve pork ladened bills to the tune of hundreds of billions, yet how fiscally concerned they become when a republican president wants to secure our border-

President Trump should chide the snot out of these people on the left and goad them into becoming fiscal hawks who are tasked with making the country become financially sound, and point out all the liberal wasteful projects that are constantly funded-

Infact, Trump should threaten that if they don’t approve the wall, He’s going to take a sushi sword and slash wasteful liberal projects from the books
