The U.S. Justice Department now says that all internet gambling is illegal.
A November opinion made public Monday reversed a 2011 opinion on the Wire Act, which established the law as applicable to only sports betting. The DOJ claims that the 2011 opinion misinterpreted the statute and reinterprets the Wire Act to encompass all forms of gambling that crosses state boundaries.
The opinion could have wide-reaching effects in states that sell lottery tickets online or where online gambling is legal. This number has increased in recent months following the Supreme Courts decision to legalize sports betting in the U.S. last year.
GOP megadonor and casino mogul Sheldon Adelson backed a coalition that had long lobbied the Justice Department to reconsider its 2011 decision. While the precise effects of the change are unclear, lobbyists told The Washington Post that it could affect interstate compacts and lotteries.

So I guess I cannot go to Saratoga (NY) anymore. The Internet would just be one form of interstate crossing.

Ill bet they dont say that Powerball is illegal...if the State does it, its probably okay.

States have slowly assumed business operations which use to belong to criminals. The States now run gambling operations, sell drugs, and run protection rackets (just try not paying your taxes and see what happens). About the only criminal operation they haven’t taken over yet is prostitution.
No one cares what the Department of inJustice declares illegal or legal.
I’m supposed to listen to a bunch of stinking criminals?
Don’t think so.
So true. And, like the mafia, they don’t like any competition!
Government=mafia

Right next to the prohibition against weed. Gov will say they are doing it for your own good and interstate commerce and anything else. Whatever it takes to create more criminals... and the need for more government.
I believe part of the problem is an international treaty where we’d be in violation if online betting was allowed.
And believe me, they sure know illegal when they see it... If you get my meaning... :(
The comment illustrates the gross ignorance of the posters
“Not at all like a tax which is involuntarily paid at the point of a gun. Lots and lots of guns, actually.”
Try not paying it and see how many guns you see. Voluntary my a$$.
So, they’re banning the stock market??
Chevron deference needs to die.
Spit.
The Commerce Clause empowers Congress to pass a law, or not.
It does not power unelected bureaucrats to sit around writing administrative rules that have the full-force of law.
Lighten up, the comment is humor! It’s based on how often you hear people saying (it’s a cliché) that the “stock market is like going to the casino”.
I’m thinking we can’t blame Sessions for this one.
Good to know they have all other Federal crimes well eradicated.
That is still only an opinion. It can still be challenged in court. The Justice Department makes rules it does not make laws. There is a difference. That is why an official interpretation is left to the court. Even if there is an unfavorable ruling legislation can be changed to clear up the matter.
