A Canadian man originally given 15 years in prison for drug smuggling was sentenced to death in China on Monday after a one-day retrial, the surprising verdict coming amid growing tensions between Beijing and Ottawa after the arrest of a top Chinese tech executive last month. Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was given the death penalty in Dalian Intermediate People’s Court in the northeast province of Liaoning after an appeals court last month agreed with prosecutors

Hey! This is China. They DO NOT MESS AROUND.

So, you want to play games with Huawei, and the CFO. Fine, Watch what China does.

The "deep state" has no friggin idea what it is playing with. You want a war...Neocons? How does smallpox sound?

I'm tell youse guys, America better get a handle on it's "deep state" before things get really hot. And make no mistake, it was the American deep state that got Huawei CFO arrested. Just to styme Trump in his trade negotiations with China.

The deep state doesn't care about consequences. They cannot see that far. All they see is their socialist utopia.

Giving the Huawei official a life term in a Supermax prison would be a reasonable response. While it would be nice to put her to death, we are, unfortunately, constrained by the lack of a death penalty for economic crimes.

There are certain countries in Asia and the Middle East where drug smuggling is a death penalty offense.I remember the first time I visited Singapore and seeing both on the landing card and in the arrivals hall warnings that drug smugglers could be executed.I was so so shaken by these signs that I was tempted to ditch my blood pressure meds...just in case.

This person either was,or was not, carrying drugs.Given recent tensions between China and Canada it's certainly possible that the Chinese set him/her up.

China does not consider itself to be bound by Western rules/norms/customs.

Assuming you meant to say that you have zero problems...I agree 100%.But not knowing the circumstances of this *particular* case it occurs to me,as well as the author of the piece, that this could be a case of the Chinese trying to push Canada around in connection with things that have happened in recent weeks/months.

The Chinese are known to play rough.

An interesting feature of Chinese courts is the fact that appeals can lead to heavier punishments, as this Canadian drug user found to his cost.

On a personal note, at some point in time, you might personally become party to these international disputes. Given the way the Chinese tend to use gweilos/laowais as hostages, you will want to monitor the situation carefully. That’s not even factoring in the raw xenophobia that has, in some situations, led to foreigners getting lynched, with officials getting in on the action:

[China hasn’t forgotten about the Opium Dens.]

Opium has entered Chinese mythology as the reason that it fell behind. It’s also BS. Opium wasn’t just sold in China. It was sold and consumed throughout the world, in more concentrated and dangerous forms like laudanum, morphine and heroin, completely legally. Sears sold patent medicines whose main ingredient was opium or morphine. It wasn’t until the 1910’s that drug prohibition became part of Western law. (We threw alcohol prohibition into the mix in 1920, as well, only to repeal that in the 1930’s).

China itself has a long history of experience with opium and other narcotic drugs. Opium was introduced there in the 7th century. 2nd century China saw experimentation with poisonous substances* like the following: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold-Food_Powder. You might consider it a distant relative of shrooms, peyote, toad-licking and glue-sniffing.

* A significant number of Han Dynasty emperors died in their early 20’s. My earlier guess was that poisoning or assassination by dynastic rivals was involved. Another possibility? Excessive use of Cold Food Powder.

“This person either was,or was not, carrying drugs.Given recent tensions between China and Canada it’s certainly possible that the Chinese set him/her up.”

The WOD is the easiest way to set someone up and throw away the key. An easily palmable package turns anyone into a “drug dealer” at the will of the state. The same with some digital files that can supposedly prove you sent child porn if they are “found” on your drive in some lab thousands of miles away. Anyone at any time can now be taken away and the people will cheer.

China is not the only place that knows this...

Schellenberg appealed his 15 year prison sentence.

They gave him a shorter one.

How can this be possible?

I heard Canadians are better than everyone else!

Why just a few months ago at a Wal-Mart pharmacy in Tarpon FL one of them was explaining it to me whilst attempting to pay for $3.00 worth of "overpriced American" aspirin with his Canadian healthcare card!

It took awhile for the pharmacist to explain to the fellow that he was not, in fact, in Canada.

This made him very angry, naturally, and helped him underline the many reasons Canada was superior to the USA.

Singapore is actually pretty good at figuring out who the real bad guys are - they don't use their laws as indiscriminately as the US does. Their prosecutors don't get rewarded for high volumes.
