There are certain countries in Asia and the Middle East where drug smuggling is a death penalty offense.I remember the first time I visited Singapore and seeing both on the landing card and in the arrivals hall warnings that drug smugglers could be executed.I was so so shaken by these signs that I was tempted to ditch my blood pressure meds...just in case.

This person either was,or was not,carrying drugs.Given recent tensions between China and Canada it's certainly possible that the Chinese set him/her up.

China does not consider itself to be bound by Western rules/norms/customs.

On a personal note, at some point in time, you might personally become party to these international disputes. Given the way the Chinese tend to use gweilos/laowais as hostages, you will want to monitor the situation carefully. Why just a few months ago at a Wal-Mart pharmacy in Tarpon FL one of them was explaining it to me whilst attempting to pay for $3.00 worth of "overpriced American" aspirin with his Canadian healthcare card!

It took awhile for the pharmacist to explain to the fellow that he was not, in fact, in Canada.

This made him very angry, naturally, and helped him underline the many reasons Canada was superior to the USA.
