Jim Lentz has a stern message for President Trump.
There is no such thing as an American-made car, he told FOX Business Jeff Flock during an interview at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
.... his biggest fear is tariffs and he is hopeful that the United States Mexico Canada Agreement, which will govern $1.2 trillion in trade, will be ratified by Congress by the end of the year.
Mr. President...it's important that we're able to compete with the rest of the world and keep our costs down. You're doing great things for the economy, let's keep this industry strong.
Lentz added that tariffs would be difficult for the Japanese automaker which already produces one of the most American-made cars the Toyota Camry, which has been a top-selling sedan for 17 years.

Yes. Henry Fords foreign rubber plantations
Thanks to technology theft and globalism.
We defend, help and strengthen our allies and trading partners and they shaft us in return. China especially. A communist country profiting madly via their government owned industrial corporations using slave labor and our technology and dominating our own consumer markets while they're pouring their billions of US profits into building their military. Remember what happened when we finally had to cutoff Japan when they got too big for their britches in the late 40's? Yeah, and we went way out of our way to defend China back then, too. As the world turns.
The coming Asian war is going to be a real doozy. Hmmmm... and Germany rearming, too? And Russia saber rattling? How soon they forget.
I wanted to buy all American. Then I realized the autoworker’s unions support Obama and Hillary.
Not to worry, though. Between W.’s nation-building and Barack, I no longer have any decent money. I used to contribute pretty good taxes, too, on my income.
Democrats, not happy the USA wasn’t totally-destroyed under Barack have embarked on a 2-year ridiculous war against the only recent President trying to save their sorry behinds.
I don’t like them very much. There, I said that nicely.
“...Toyota has fallen so far behind in quality...”
Sure about that? Toyota currently ranks #3 for reliability, just under Porsche and Lexus.
Also, Lexus is owned by Toyota.
I have a 2002 Sienna and a 2012 Prius - both have over 130k miles and the only problems I have had are due to the drivers behind the wheel not the quality of the cars.
His point is accurate - no car is 100% American parts.
Toyota is still one of the most American made for the vehicles produced for the U.S.
And he is correct Trump is doing great things for the economy and should keep it up!
I owned a Toyota Land Cruiser back in the 70’s. Great off road vehicle. But it turned out the engine was basically a copy of the old Chevy 6-cylinder.
Even Harley Davidson motorcycles are made with foreign parts.
My biggest fear is not having import tariffs. More tariffs and higher please.
Closed factories and unemployment are real difficulties too.
Why we need a tariff to FORCE car makers to make all part here in the USA.
True. But we can have meaningful discussions about which cars have the most value coming from American labor. I'd be fine with considering that a car which has 51% of its value coming from American operations to be "American made".
If it weren’t for an American there would be no Car.
That is true until domestic car part makers come on line. THE SITUATION IS NOT STATIC YOU ECONOMIC BUFFOON.
Until there is a war.....
We should put punitive tariffs on all that stuff. I mean nip it.
UAW only builds half the cars in the USA.
Sounds about right.
50% of the total car or just certain models / makes?
Let me guess, Shep must be the hack...wouldn’t surprise me.
According to Cars.com and their “American-Made index,” the most American-made vehicle of 2018 was the Jeep Cherokee, which was assembled in the US, had a US-built engine and transmission, and 72% of whose parts were made in the US.
The next two on the list were Hondas assembled in Alabama. With 3 Hondas and an Acura, Honda had more cars in the top 10 than any other manufacturer.
The top Ford was the Ford Taurus at #4, which I think will be discontinued soon as Ford is getting out of the US passenger car market entirely other than the Mustang. The top GM is the heavily taxpayer-subsidized Chevy Volt at #5, and the next GM after that is the Corvette at #10.
I’m not sure the nameplate really tells you much anymore as to whether the car is American-made.
Jeep. An FCA product.
And what does the F stand for in FCA?
Hint. It ain’t Ford. A Cherokee can hardly be an American car if $$$ goes to Italy on every unit sold.
