On day one of the first Los Angeles Unified School District teachers strike in 30 years, United Teachers Los Angeles President Alex Caputo-Pearl spoke to teachers and students gathered on a rainy Monday in Los Feliz.
Here we are on a rainy day in the richest country in the world, in the richest state in the country, in a state as blue as it can be, and in a city rife with millionaires, where teachers have to go on strike to get the basics for our students, Caputo-Pearl said.
The strike, originally scheduled to take place last Thursday, was delayed until Monday in hopes of reaching a last-minute deal.
Instead, more than 32,000 Los Angeles teachers and staff members walked off the job Monday, leaving about 600,000 students to wonder when they will see them again.

It’s a shame that productive American citizens are not paying enough in taxes to educate the (at least) 2.3 million illegals in California. Perhaps if California raised their taxes on their remaining working Americans, and prevented them from moving to lower tax states, those people would finally fully fund their share of education for our Mexican, Honduran, Salvadoran, and Guatemalan welfare families.
No doubt mothers are panicking at the thought of having to find someone to babysit their children while they work. They depend on teachers to do that.
> Numbers are irrelevant. Try getting teachers who know the subject matter and can TEACH. <
You are correct in that numbers are irrelevant. But what’s missing from your comment is “orderly classrooms”. It’s very difficult to remove a disruptive student from a classroom these days. And it’s tough to teach when you have one kid running around the room, and two more yelling and pushing each other.
Twenty years ago most teachers had the support of the administration in such cases. And their were real consequences for student misbehavior. But now teachers are constantly second-guessed. “What are you doing to make your lessons more appealing?” “Why can’t you control your classroom?” Etc.
All that second-guessing is done to keep the suspension rates down. That’s how school administrators get evaluated. these days.
Even worse, the Democrats running the government don’t have any Republicans to blame. It’s worse than Pearl Harbor.
You’ll end up with all the local politicians supporting the teachers but doing nothing.
It never rains in California, but girl don’t they warn ya
It pours, man it pours
They will still blame Republicans.
I live near Baltimore. In the immediate aftermath of the Freddie Gray Riots, they really notched it up and blamed Republicans for every single level of failure.
IIRC, the last time a Republican held any sort of elected position in Baltimore, many of the residents were overseas fighting the Nazi’s.
As the former President of the American Federation of Teachers famously said, “I’ll start worrying about the children when they start paying dues.”
I have an idea.
Instead of pointing to things that are NOT causing the problems, as I mentioned, how about the teachers calling out the Administration’s downright tyrannical approach and unhelpful choices of discipline for the students.
What is exactly, not vague innuendoes, but exactly WHAT the REAL problems are.
If it is student behavior, tell us. For some reason they seem to avoid the truth.
there's a reason why they don't want their wages/benefits to be public knowledge..
and then they put in 185 days or so....some of those days are "curriculum days" so the teachers can sit around and talk and eat and drink all day...

Here we are on a rainy day in the country with the Most Debt in the world, in the Most Indebted state in the country, in a state as blue as it can be, and in a city rife with Illegals Draining the Public Coffers, where teachers who have Failed to Teach have to Go on Strike to get the BIG BUCKS for our Union Membership,
Caputo-Pearl DIDN’T SAY.
Thanks for complimenting me for my choice. I have always been a fan of the most adult, even thought provoking sitcom in my memory.
Whoever is the genius who thought of that name “Maris Crane” I thank him/her. I got a good laugh out of even that.
Thanks again.
Protest changes in pensions and health bennies. Though they won’t say that in public.
Yep..Raw contempt is all these unionized leftist will get from me.

You make a very good point! I’ve taught in urban public schools for many years. And trust me, the rank-and-file are very upset about the lack of classroom discipline.
But no one above the rank of classroom teacher seems to care. We write letters to the editor, and they don’t get published. No one from the media comes to investigate. And the union leadership is more concerned about endorsing Democrats than in classroom safety.
I guess it’s all about not rocking the the boat, and avoiding any bad press.
Quick story:
A knife fight once broke out in the classroom of a friend of mine. What did my friend do? He picked up the phone and immediately dialed 911. This was serious business! Well, my friend was later called on the carpet for that. Call 911 again, and you’ll be fired for insubordination.
He was told he must call school security first (that way the school can bury the report).
In WA state, the Supreme Court ruled that schools weren’t being funded and ORDERED spending to be jacked up several Billion dollars. The teachers went on strike of course to improve education for the children, and were looking for 15-20% raises in pay, with guaranteed COLA yearly + 3%.
The link above does not include all of the rant broadcast on L.A. local TV. The strike demands also include a limit on future Charter schools, and stated that people involved in forming Charters became millionaires. FALSE. The usual crap-speak out of a Union bully. One would think that the CA education rating which is about 40th (+?) in the country would offer apologies rather than demands. The strike is a part of strikes in other states first begun in W. Virginia. Randi Weingarten was mentioned! (google her bio!) I call B.S. on the National teachers unions. Close the Fed. Dept. of Ed. Put schools back into control of local districts, and the lotteries to get in a Charter will be diminished. A school in Dana Point just proudly announced they were switching to Spanish language ‘immersion’. Kids will get half a lesson, while Libs marvel at how virtuous they are. Our kids are so short-changed but will be urged to welcome all the wetback spill-over that has ruined CA and it’s once great education reputation.
I don’t care.
The California school system went from first to next-to-last in my lifetime, and it had nothing to do with me or any Republicans.
Just another step closer to the third world that they seem to want.
That is a terrible story.
This is not a new thing, though. Years ago a male friend of mine was teaching high school. He was a big guy, but one of the gentlest, soft spoken good teachers who cared about his students in a transitional area where many did not want to work.
One day some students were fighting and he tried to stop it.
The students beat him to the ground. Days later, while he was telling me, he broke down and cried. I was shocked.
The problem isn’t new, it appears Teachers have reached the point where they need a “Donald J. Trump.”
Great, hopefully they will stay on strike until summer. Let the public get real sick of those worthless commie bastards.
