SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- "Hamilton" star and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda on Monday praised a delegation of congressional Democrats for traveling to Puerto Rico, despite criticism over their trip's timing during a partial government shutdown.
"I'm very proud to work with the Latino Victory Fund because you're here to work, despite what anyone might claim," said Miranda during a speech at the progressive organization's summit.
"I know you all saw the blue tarps when your plane landed in Puerto Rico," Miranda told the members of Congress in the audience, referring to temporary roof coverings provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to homes that lost their roofs after the September 2017 hurricane.
A group of 36 Democrat lawmakers traveled to the Caribbean territory to attend dual conventions held in San Juan by Bold PAC, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) campaign arm, and the Latino Victory Fund (LVF), which is dedicated to expanding Latino political participation.

My eyes are up here, Senator Menendez.
In every interview I’ve heard with Lin-Manuel Miranda, he is extremely non-political. I’ve never heard him criticize any Republican. He probably is a Democrat, but he’s not one of the nasty partisan kind.
In this speech, it simply sounds like he’s simply affirming whatever help can be provided to Puerto Rico.
Why does Puerto Rico stumble from crisis to crisis?
Instead of trying 'spotlight' problems in Puerto Rico why not try to solve them?
Fact: The democrats are in Puerto Rico
Fact: The president is in the White House waiting to cut a deal
Fact: Federal workers did not receive a paycheck for the first time in the history of the United States due to a shut down
Fact: Federal workers will receive all their back pay immediately upon the reopening of Government.
Fact: democrats are responsible for the prolonged shut down.
Fact: The democrats can push but they are standing on ice, therefor when they push, they only push themselves back.
Keep pushing back democrats.
Theo, you only have to barely Google to find Lin Manuels latest tweet and insult to our President
Your occasional reminder that our current president lies as easily as you and I breathe air.......everyday, all day, reflexively
What’s with all these minorities playing Hamilton? I don’t care about minorities playing any part for any production but for historical reasons I think it’s dumb. Are they going to have a minority play George Washington? It’s blatant race mocking. How about a play with a white guy in Martin Luther King Jr role?
Puerto Rico is a beautiful island, but even 45 years ago the infrastructure and power sources were compromised.....and it only got worse
Day by day it was sketchy on the island ......thankfully I lived on a self sustaining Army base.
You forgot that he personally called out and supported the attack on Pence at his concert?
Hes super political and if Republicans has done this with a country concert in Texas hed be joining the calls about corruption and tone deafness - but hes a Democrat so when they party on the taxpayers dime he defends it.
Ah, I had to search his Twitter timeline to find that:

Yeah, that’s harsh. Honestly, that’s the first time I’ve seen him say such a thing. Typically, he’s been gracious and deferential.
He does love Puerto Rico, so many he was triggered by Trump’s slamming the Democrats who went there during the partial government shutdown. I wish Lin-Manuel hasn’t said that. :-/
Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis in the West Indies by an unwed mother......
she was French/ British and his father was Scottish
Todays revisionists are taking liberties with speculation that the mom had mixed blood.....but there is not substantial evidence
.....
He didn’t really. Another actor addressed Pence, and it was more of an inappropriately-timed encouragement to represent certain groups than it was an attack.
Yup. Just saw that. Unfortunate. I really like Lin-Manuel Miranda. Wish he hasn’t said that.
He did. Really.
I don’t remember who elected MIRANDA.
If anyone should be triggered it should be our President!
He stayed in the White House during Christmas Break while Nancy Pelosi went to Hawaii
30 something Dems go to Puerto Rico and play while the shut down continues
If Donald Trump steps one toe away from the White House or hits one golf ball, the Dems will rain down ugly!
Cmon Theo......they Boooed Pence
No, he didn’t. Brandon Dixon was the person who addressed Pence, not Miranda. And this is what Dixon said:
“Thank you so much for joining us tonight. You know, we had a guest in the audience this evening. And Vice President-elect Pence, I see you’re walking out but I hope you will hear us just a few more moments. There’s nothing to boo here ladies and gentlemen. There’s nothing to boo here, we’re all here sharing a story of love.
“We have a message for you, sir. We hope that you will hear us out. And I encourage everybody to pull out your phones and tweet and post because this message needs to be spread far and wide, OK?
“Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical, we really do. We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us.
“Again, we truly thank you for sharing this show. This wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men [and] women of different colors, creeds, and orientations.”
Inappropriate? Yes. Misguided? Yes. An ill-informed challenge? Yes. But not an attack.
