Wall Impasse Frustrates Many Newly Elected House Democrats
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 13th, 2019 | By Natalie Andrews and Kristina Peterson

WASHINGTON—As the partial government shutdown stretches on, some House Democrats have grown concerned by what they see as the absence of a clear strategy from party leaders over how to end it.

Some newly elected Democrats are increasingly frustrated that they are taking complaints from angry constituents without having a mapped-out plan to end the partial shutdown—which became the longest in modern history over the weekend. Many believe they were elected to Congress to try to end its dysfunction and had hoped to be reaching a bipartisan compromise over border security to reopen the government.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) enjoys broad support among her caucus just weeks after Democrats took back control of the chamber and elected her its leader, and few dispute her opposition to building a border wall. Yet while the wall for many has become a toxic symbol of President Trump’s immigration agenda, some Democrats would rather be emphasizing an effort to reach an agreement with Mr. Trump and congressional Republicans.

“There’s a number of us on the Democratic side who are quite concerned that we’re not working on negotiated positions and taking the bull by the horns and trying to think about what it would look like,” said Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a new Michigan lawmaker and former Central Intelligence Agency analyst.

“Democratic “every vote counts” rhetoric aside, there is now only one vote in the House imo, and that vote belongs to Speaker Pelosi.”

Say what you will about that silly, commie b!tch, but’s she’s been the most effective Speaker in my lifetime of over 60yrs.

Nobody, and I mean nobody cracks a whip like Nancy.

Far, FAR fewer Dims have to crack for this to move forward on Trump’s terms.

A mere 7 of 47 Dim Senators to break the existing filibuster and get the last Republican House bill passed.

Their best hope to get out of this is wait until enough quisling RINOs get wobbly and decide to support a veto proof majority. I think the likelihood of that happening given enough time, is 60/40 in favor. In other words, it’s more likely than not that if this goes on long enough, the RINOs will hand the dems a major, major victory.

Many RINOs lost in the recent election. Even if House passes a veto proof bill, it's unlikely to go anywhere in the Senate because McConnell will not even consider it, or at least for the time being.

“The last Republican bill” expired with the old House.

Just FYI. :-(

This is, after all, the logical conclusion to The Resistance, and if it isn't turning out to be the triumph they thought it would be in mid-November, they have only themselves to blame. The Dems could have used the wall to wrest political concessions from Trump, which is the way politics works in this country. Instead it's a silly impasse, and the concessions they might have gotten are dwindling day by day.

The media are doing their part with these heart-rending stories of federal workers at food banks two days after their first missed paycheck. Too bad nobody's buying it.

The wall to wall sob stories are just starting. We will be fed a steady diet of ever increasingly sad stories about people who are suffering, even dying because of the evil and heartless republicans. Works every time it's tried, except, to Mitch's credit, against the Kavanough situation. And even then, Kavanaugh probably loses if not for Lindsey Graham's fire breathing outrage pulling the wobbly GOPe back from the edge of the cliff.

Yeah, that was impressive. After McCain's death, seems like Graham discovered his balls.

“5 billion for the wall and done.”

115 Billion taxpayers money spent annually on illegal immigration support. Audit the spending account, the agency, how much money goes to state governments and audit. Then cut that budget by 10% and use that money for border security.

It will be interesting to follow the career of Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, “a new Michigan lawmaker and former Central Intelligence Agency analyst.”

It will be particularly interesting to follow her activities in relation to those of her fellow freshman Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

For example, Rep. Slotkin promised not to vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, and she and kept her promise by voting “present.” On the other hand, AOC spent months denouncing Nancy as an old Establishment gargoyle who needed to be replaced by younger leadership and then voted for Nancy anyway.

Also, Rep. Slotkin seems to be the only Democratic House member concerned about the Shutdown impasse who has been courageous enough to speak out about it, particularly about the failure of Nancy Pelosi to offer clear guidelines for resolving it.

I wonder how she feels about Nancy deciding to fly off on a vacation to Puerto Rico while the Democrats of Washington are left leaderless to muddle through the longest shutdown in history.

When EBT funds “dry up” they will just stop the in store verification so people can by whatever they want even with a $0 balance.
This happened at a Walmart a year(?) ago and they decided to just honor the cards without verification. People were loading grocery carts with anything they could grab.

Yep. Just wait for the EBTs to stop somewhere around Feb 1.

That reminds me, I'm probably going to need A LOT more ammo.

It seems to me that some of these Freshmen Democrats were elected by illegals because there was no wall.

"Say what you will about that silly, commie b!tch, but’s she’s been the most effective Speaker in my lifetime of over 60yrs."

Like all other 60+ yrs taxpayers, that’s how long you’ve been paying unconstitutional federal taxes.

"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States."—Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

Patriots are reminded that if a federal domestic social spending program is not reasonably related to the US Mail Service (1.8.7) then you can bet that it is unconstitutional and probably be right most of the time.

So even though Nancy knows how to crack the whip, she is still a crook.

I believe that the Republican House bill died with the convening of the new Congress (Dem majority in the House). I don’t believe a bill with funding for the wall can originate in the Senate.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Believe me, I would like to be wrong.

I say the glass is half full.

Hopefully, its only a matter of time before taxpaying voters catch up with the thieving federal government.
