Can an iPad Replace My Laptop or Desktop Computer?
Lifewire ^ | Jan 2 2019 | Daniel Nations

Did you know the iPad Pro is more powerful than the entry-level laptops lining the shelves at Best Buy? The iPad earns that "Pro" name with a processor that is on par with a mid-level PC. This is in addition to a screen resolution that exceeds many of those same laptops and the graphics power of an XBOX 360. And when you combine this with an operating system that supports slide-over and split-screen multitasking and a virtual touchpad, it's about time to reevaluate the iPad as a laptop killer.

Ipad is great for bedtime reading, movies, youtube etc and for when you’re on the move. The rest of the time it’s laptop or desktop.

The latest non-Pro iPad 9.7” with 32gb of ram and Wifi (not cellular) is THE steal of the entire Apple line IMO.

$279.99 at Best Buy.

THE most bang for the buck for regular folks and all they will likely need to do everything regular folks do with a computer. Sister and I got one for Mom to replaced her cracked older iPad.

Most people have wifi hotspots on their phones, so hook it up to that for a “cellular” iPad.

You are correct sir — I have an iPad Air. Somehow “Pro” weaved itself into my sub consciousness and made its way to my fingers when I typed out my initial response. Cheers!

I also used a Hewlett-Packard 9820 back in the day. A real work horse. It was originally the brains for a HP GC/MS system in the lab then retired when HP came out with the 9845. Virtually all the 9820s were bundled with high end lab analyzers.

All told, the company invested about $20k in the total desktop package. The 9820 itself, thermal paper printer, x-y plotter and 5.25 floppy disk drive. Programs we wrote ourselves to handle pilot plant raw data, statistics and modeling. That HP Basic was a real sweet language that eliminated a lot of lines of code compared to using FORTRAN.

I haven’t had a computer besides my iPad for over 3 years now. No need for the extra baggage. If you need a printer, get a Bluetooth one and you’re set.

My laptop has been collecting dust for years. I make due, but I don’t do anything serious at home anymore. If I ever get back into flight sims, I’ll get a desktop again. Need a tower for all the control hookups, and big screen(s).

Travel with a Mac Pro Laptop and a iPad Pro with a key board as my backup ...... they have served me well ..... zero complaints.

I am very different. I love my iPad. I have not turned my laptop or desk top on in many years. I have hundreds of books on my ipad Kindle. I have worn 3 out over the years. Guess that is what happened. They started doing their own thing! I can take it anywhere I go.

It’s an interface thing. I’m used to typing numbers into spreadsheets on a laptop - pretty good with the right hand on the numbers pad. Pretty much a fumblethumbs (literally) on the touch pad.

I have two iPads and don’t like either because neither has a real keyboard with a touch pad. Even adding a key board doesn’t add a touch pad, but does add a lot of bulk and weight.
