California’s Next Ban: Paper Receipts
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 11, 2019

First they came for the plastic bags, then plastic straws. Now California progressives want to ban paper receipts. Like so many other liberal crusades, the fight against paper receipts is cronyism masquerading as green virtue.

California’s good liberals see a green villain behind every corner. If something doesn’t kill sea turtles then it will likely give you cancer. The state banned single-use plastic bags in 2016, which was followed last year by a prohibition on plastic straws in restaurants. Warnings are required on products that regulators deem even remotely carcinogenic, from potato chips to aspirin.

The latest scourge is paper receipts. According to state Assemblyman Phil Ting of San Francisco, receipts generate 686 million pounds of waste and 12 billion pounds of carbon dioxide each year, the equivalent of one million cars on the road. They may also contain the chemical BPA, which could cause birth defects if ingested in high doses. Is eating receipts a new diet fad in California?

Mr. Ting this week proposed legislation requiring businesses to offer e-receipts as the default option or pay a fine of $25 per day. Many merchants are upgrading to mobile payment processing and checkout systems because millennials spurn cash and all things paper. But his bill would mandate that all businesses adopt such new hardware and software systems.

As it happens, the biggest beneficiary would likely be Square Inc., whose headquarters is in San Francisco and is run by CEO Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame.

I insist on paper receipts. Personally I can’t stand email billing either. We get dozens of emails a day. If we don’t immediately save or print the receipts, we quickly lose them.

I travel for work and frequently have AMEX entries for names that don’t match where I spent the money.

QuikStop gas station may be listed on the entry as AAASpecialstore LLC or something like that, the official name of the business, not the name on the sign.

Another liberal idea to hate.

Can’t do this!!!!

iRS requires taxpayers to provide receipts as proof of transaction.

Statements are not primary evidence.

This will be challenged immediately, and courts will strike down on basis that electronic chain of custody evidence.... Cannot be proven.

It’s too easy for fraudsters to make fake digital receipts to substantiate deductions.

So this can’t standup to review, until a digital fingerprint, or something similar is established for all digital records.

Keep dreaming libtards, the taxman will over rule you.

iRS requires taxpayers to provide receipts as proof of transaction.

You'll have to go home and print out your E-Receipt on an 8.5"X11" sheet of paper to replace the 2"X4" receipt the store would have given you.

As a life long bookkeeper/accounting person, I can tell you that you MUST have receipts for any expense reports you turn in to your employer.

You also MUST have receipts for anything you deduct on your tax return.

IF you don’t get a paper bank statement & you need to have a printed version older than 3 or 6 months-—you won’t be able to get it.

This idea flies in the face of mandatory PROOF of payment for items you must prove you made.

As for keeping records-—I have my tax records back to 1963. They are in ‘bankers boxes’ & I am pretty sure I have no more than 9 of them with those boxes with records inside. I use a 2-3” three ring notebook for my records, and keep all credit card statements-—WITH THE receipts—and all bills I pay in those notebooks. Indexes for each month, and I get a printed bank statement. I DO NOT do ANY banking online, nor do I purchases items on the internet. I write checks & mail them out. The notebook keeps everything neat & handy if I have to pull something out from the past.

I have been a self employed bookkeeper since 1980, and I used that notebook process for their records , also. In a couple of cases, I had to use 2 notebooks a year, but their storage of their activity is easy & neat. No file folders-—everything 3 hole punched & into the notebook.

AND-—Many of those current receipts are printed on heat sensitive paper. They become UNREADABLE after about 6-8 months if not stored well, and still might fade away on you.
