U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he is planning changes to the H-1B program that grants temporary visas to highly educated immigrants who work in specialty occupations such as technology or medicine.
"H1-B (sic) holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship," Trump said on Twitter. "We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the U.S."
It was unclear what Trump meant by a "potential path to citizenship" for H-1B visa holders, who already are eligible to be sponsored by their employers for legal permanent residency, which would make them eligible to become U.S. citizens.

You don’t know what you are complaining about
And you do?
How many from their various sh*tholes will they EACH later sponsor, on average..?
10..?
More..?
FORGET IT.
I know that you don’t know.
On the other hand, I'd much rather have trained IT professionals and engineers immigrating to the U.S. than potential MS13 gang members and yet another landscaper.
Very BAD idea.
Pandering to the DNC donors is NOT going to get you votes
The “potential path to citizenship” just means the same as other people applying for IMMIGRATION...
If they are eligible for nationalization...
Its potential not definite/guaranteed...
They’ll be vetted for citizenship...
Probably a green card first...if they are eligible...
HELL NO!
The last thing Americans need is “our American” corporations importing more and more Communist Chinese and other foreign workers to give “our” jobs to, right here in USA.
This is LOSING, big-time.
The H1B program was sold on the basis it would admit persons with skills NOT AVAILABLE IN USA. What a phuquing LIE.
99% of the people the big companies import to take our jobs in USA are NOT even as qualified as our own workers... who the corporations won’t hire and won’t even interview or consider
We need to see what is to be changed. Maybe through simplification abuse will be reduced
“You don’t know what you are complaining about”
Sure he does and so do I. Get admitted to Gwinnett Medical Center in my area. Practically all the technicians and half the nursing staff are foreign. Doing the jobs Americans are just too stupid to do. RIght?
The H1B Visa program has been corrupted. In the IT field job descriptions are written so that they can eliminate qualified US citizens and then hire cheaper labor from abroad. I’ve seen this first hand. The applicants from abroad are not more qualified, they will just work for less.
This is disastrous!
I was in IT, l am glad Im retired. It was hard enough staying viable with young guns coming fresh out of school every quarter domestically. Throw in 3rd world tech dudes willing to work for what is in petty cash and you have a nightmare.
Especially giving it up with nothing done on all the enforcement and reforms we need for getting rid of our current and incoming illegals.
The program was always corrupt.
It was always about importing cheaper foreign workers with no recourse in the American political system, in order to lower wage scales for highly paid Doctors, Nurses, and Engineers. Every other rationale use to justify this program was (and is) a cover lie.
Corporate executives all too frequently love this sort of totalitarian power and constantly lobby the politicians to gain it.
I’ll hold off judgement until I see exactly what the changes are. If the changes reduce the over all number of H1B visas, require strict rules for companies to seek out American workers first, and allow current and only highly qualified visa holders to become free agents instead of the current system where they’re essentially held hostage for cheap labor, then such changes would be a positive step.
Abolishing the program would certainly “simplify” it.
You dont know what you are complaining about
I do. Do you?
H1B Visas do not bring in highly trained talented workers. There are other categories of Visas reserved for those.
There is an unlimited number of tech workers wanting to come here from Asia—primarily from India and China. Online coding and other related classes are offered for THOUSANDS...They are working in many ares of tech...some that most people aren’t even aware of such as pharmaceutical trials work. They will work for far less than their US counterparts.
There are Freepers here who are underemployed because of this...STEM salaries are down and US workers have had to train their replacements—look up Disney and ComEd. Of course, if you have not followed the issue (which I suspect you may not have from your response), you may not be familiar with these situations because most displaced have to sign waivers that they will not go public with their plight in order to receive severance pay...
Tech Businesses wants cheaper labor ...Just like Chamber of Commerce wants cheap lawn care, housekeepers, etc...
So we implement tariffs because don’t want to be undercut by China for goods, yet it is OK to undercut US workers? Seems inconsistent to me.
We need to do a better job of training our students and unemployed to take these positions rather than bringing in cheap foreign labor that prevents a living wage for middle class US citizens.
I do know what I am complaining about. It is BAD POLICY!
