The union representing the United States' air traffic controllers is suing the Trump administration over pay that's frozen as part of the partial government shutdown.

The Federal Aviation Administration's air traffic controllers are among the 420,000 federal employees who have been deemed essential and have been ordered to work without pay during the shutdown, which began on Dec. 22 due to an impasse over funding for a wall along the U.S. southern border.

This story developing. Check back for updates.

There's already a legal precedent that my buddy, who is a TSA employee, told me about yesterday.

They'll likely get paid double time and Those who take their vacation time will likely receive double time and the reinstatement of the vacation days.......I forgot what union organization it was.

Because it’s the FEDERAL Aviation Administration. If you want to change that, talk to Congress.

As far as I can tell, no bills have even been put before the President to sign. Congress is at fault here.

“Believe it or not they get unemployment benefits. At least in the communist blue states.”

They do, but when they get the back pay after the shutdown, which they always get, they have to pay it back. So it is sort of a loan from the state to help them out. I really don’t have a problem with that. Many folks live paycheck to paycheck.

On the other hand,if you are a government worker and don’t have a plan for a shutdown, you are stuck on stupid.

Are union members paid when they go on strike?

The one thing federal union members cannot do is go on strike and walk out. There is federal law preventing it.

and then when the government opens back up get full back pay, I would think that I would have to pay back the unemployment benefits.

If they get back pay, then yes, they have to pay back any unemployment benefits they received.

We need to create a bill to allow airport employees to be paid by the cities. Let the public see the Democrats stop it.

Just Democrats doing what Democrats do, using the legal system for frivolous lawsuits for political purposes. If they were doing it for real and not just politics, they would be suing Pelosi, Schumer and the DNC as well — but they are not.

If they don’t like the situation and they can always quit and find another employer. It’s what everyone else has to do .

And of course, we all have to ask the question - why do we need non-essential workers at all? I guess because the definition of one is different for the government than it is for us poor peons...

“Why are airport controllers a federal position? They should be paid by the city the airport is in.”

Because they are part of the National Airspace System. and they talk to each other constantly across the country. And the whole thing is orchestrated from the system command center in Virginia.

Do the tax receipts stop from being deposited into Federal funds? If this is the case then I can understand the non payment of Federal employees.

For everyone that said, well just fire them all like Reagan did, you obviously don’t understand how this works. You can’t just shutdown nationwide commerce. 2.6 million people fly everyday and the Controllers handle 43,000 flights per day. Lots of those are BIZ jets are slow movers (AKA propeller driven aircraft). Airlines in the US alone carry 42 Billion pounds of freight annually. I.E. Your amazon.com stuff from FedEx, etc....

Shutting it all down simply wont work. The ATCS are not the bad guys here. I’ve been dealing with those guys for 27 years are by and large they’re good folks just trying to move metal.

They will get back pay, but that doesn’t pay the bills right now for most of them.
