The country would face an economic hellscape if the government shutdown lasts "months or even years," as the president has suggested it might, experts tell NBC News.
The doomsday scenario might be unlikely the longest the federal government has ever shut down is 21 days, a record that will fall if the current closure lasts until Saturday but it is chilling.
"We'll be in no man's land," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, told NBC News.
If the worst were to happen, experts say the devastating impact would be widespread:
38 million low-income Americans lose food stamps
6 million face an uncertain timetable for collecting tax refunds
2 million without rental assistance and facing possible eviction
800,000 paycheck-less federal employees plunged into dire financial straits
Shuttered parks and museums while overstressed airports cause tourism to tank
Federal court system slows to a crawl
Disaster relief money doesn't get to storm-ravaged areas Lapsed FDA and EPA inspections lead to dangerous outbreaks
Private companies looking to go public are stuck in limbo
Stock market plummets
The end isn't near yet. But if the standoff persists

“We’re not talking about rangers going unpaid so Yogi and BooBoo can steal picnic baskets, the Fed is ensnarled everywhere in the economy and it will crash.”
You’ve already been schooled on all of your other nonsense but soon it WILL be the National Parks - it’s already in the works.
Let me tell you: I HAVE to drive through Yellowstone National Park (YNP, Jellystone to you) to get to the southern end of my county...and the YNP Rangers strictly enforce the 15 MPH lower speed limit than on either end of the park. No fences on either, just socialist earth loving, mankind hating rangers that want to ticket you for 2 MPH over.
When you are in the park - especially during winter - these rangers have one thing in common: too many humans in the great plains (of course there are a few good ones, but VERY few).
Things have changed radically from the time when I was interviewed for a YNP summer job (went to Alaska for work instead) or when my Mother and other relatives worked multiple summers in the park...
As far as I am concerned they can all volunteer for Green Peas and join their pod.
What I would really like to see is the states step up and do the things on this lost that they should have been doing for the last hundred years. They can run airports, parks and courts. Also, they can take care of disasters, as they occur, and do food inspections.
Loved your comment FRiend.
Sorry you had to go through that $hit.
Sincerely hope 2019 is excellent for you!
The only people affected by the partial government shutdown (non-essential services) would never vote Republican, let alone for Trump, anyhow. Republicans cannot lose.
I don't think you can make that statement and not leave out some portion of govt workers who actually do real and important work, like ICE, like Border patrol. I am sure there are a few other good folks (amongst many leeches) who are being asked to sacrifice as a result of this shutdown. For those good workers who are having to deal with this, we should be thankful for their patience. I know a few myself.
Thanks.
That was ten years ago and I’m almost over it :)
But, my sympathy for these government drones is still zero.
I heard a conservative congressman on the radio the other day tell the truth.
He said these people are welcome to get new jobs and every single one knows that their jobs are subject to appropriations and are subject to furlough. If they failed to plan, that’s their problem.

What is an nbc???
The rat constituencies will soon scream to give PDJT his $5 billion.
I don’t see a downside to millions of Federal employees finally leaving us the hell alone.
Agree. As if the stock market will plummet in the absence of regulators and busy bodies.
“No FDA inspection of meat.”
There has been a lot of contaminated meat even when there were inspections. It is probably typical incompetent government bureaucracy.
Besides, what is the Federal Drug Administration doing inspecting meat?
“Lapsed FDA and EPA inspections lead to dangerous outbreaks”
What are lapse EPA inspections going to cause? Companies not being fined for exceeding their allowed carbon output?
I couldn’t wouldn’t call that an outbreak of anything much.
The governments shut down? Had no idea. Has had exactly zero effect on my life.
Good. Fedzilla has grown out of control for decades. Screw it, shut the whole thing down—we don’t care.
“And just how many meat processors will remain open if they have to supply meat that hasnt had an inspection and could leave them liable if tainted meat gets through?”
Are you trying to tell us that every single meat processor has every single piece of meat that they sell inspected?
well, there must be tens of million of meat inspectors at the “FDA” then.
If the EBT recipients knew that illegals were responsible for their loss of “benefits,” there’d be riots...could be fun to let them know.
“Keep those fools at the EPA who regulates dishwashers and clothes washers at home forever and eliminate their jobs. So we can have clean effective appliances”
When we bought a dishwasher recently, we had to choose between clean dishes and dry dishes. Not enough energy is allowed to be used by the appliance to do both!
And don’t get me started on those worthless he washers!
