The 'doomsday' scenario: Here's what happens if the shutdown drags on
NBC ^ | 10 JUL 19 | By Dareh Gregorian

Posted on 01/10/2019 9:05:37 AM PST by DCBryan1

The country would face an economic hellscape if the government shutdown lasts "months or even years," as the president has suggested it might, experts tell NBC News.

The doomsday scenario might be unlikely — the longest the federal government has ever shut down is 21 days, a record that will fall if the current closure lasts until Saturday — but it is chilling.

"We'll be in no man's land," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, told NBC News.

If the worst were to happen, experts say the devastating impact would be widespread:

•38 million low-income Americans lose food stamps
•6 million face an uncertain timetable for collecting tax refunds
•2 million without rental assistance and facing possible eviction
•800,000 paycheck-less federal employees plunged into dire financial straits
•Shuttered parks and museums while overstressed airports cause tourism to tank
•Federal court system slows to a crawl
•Disaster relief money doesn't get to storm-ravaged areas •Lapsed FDA and EPA inspections lead to dangerous outbreaks
•Private companies looking to go public are stuck in limbo
•Stock market plummets

The end isn't near — yet. But if the standoff persists

They will be declared essential workers. And they will work, or forever give up any hope of a Federal job and pension.

And you can have that warm, fuzzy, safe feeling thinking about the possibility that your air traffic controller is more worried his house under foreclosure and being late to work because his truck was repossessed than his job.

The shooting starts and we can execute ALL the democrat traitors?

There is something about them trying to overthrow the Constitution that just seems to bring out the mass murderer...

It would end the Constitution, as we know it, but no Leftist would survive to cheer it.

I understand the Coast Guard is under the Department of Homeland Security, that is my concern. Always treated as step children.

They’re not afraid of the effect of the government shutdown, they’re afraid we won’t even notice it is shutdown and we’ll start asking some inconvenient questions like what are we paying all these taxes for.

Written January 3, a week ago - read last 2 paragraphs in particular:

From: https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2019/01/03/president-trump-posts-border-wall-meme-on-instagram-that-will-make-democrats-go-bananas/#more-158439

From all appearances President Trump is not backing down from his demand for border security that includes a border wall physical barrier. And while Democrats thought they had him painted into a zero-sum corner, well, there’s every indication the White House is prepared to let the partial government shutdown go on for months if needed.

This position now puts all the pressure on Nancy Pelosi.

It looks like President Trump tasked Chairman Kevin Hassett, of the White House Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), to run the numbers on how the prolonged government shut-down might have an impact on the economy.

Hassett’s rough estimate, calculated from the withdrawal of income from the furloughed federal employees, is around 1/10th of one percent per pay cycle (every two weeks) in GDP impact. Little to no actual economic effect.

“If Trump can build his wall via emergency, then there really is no reason to keep the gov’t shutdown.

And when the EO does come, can you imagine the reaction from the affected Dem base when the idiot Dem leadership tries to sue over it?”

Trump should not sign the continuing resolution to reopen the government until all court challenges are resolved.

FDA doesn’t inspect meat - USDA part of the Ag Dept does that.

“And just how many meat processors will remain open if they have to supply meat that hasn’t had an inspection and could leave them liable if tainted meat gets through?”

One of the rarest sights in America is a USDA meat inspector. It’s just not done.

Suppliers conduct their won inspections in accordance with an approved and validated process/personnel and stamp USDA on the carcass.

Most Federal workers could go a couple of months, or more, without a paycheck. ESPECIALLY when they know if they leave/quit, they have given up the juiciest job they ever had or ever will have.

Trump is aware - worked to get them paid through the end of the year, so at least they got one more paycheck they would not have gotten otherwise. Problem there going forward, of course.

Trump personally intervened to pay Coast Guard in shutdown
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/trump-personally-intervened-to-pay-coast-guard-in-shutdown

From article:

“Will I get paid on Jan. 15? This approval only covers the Dec. 31, 2018 paycheck. It does not guarantee a paycheck on Jan. 15, 2019. Meeting active duty and reserve military payroll for January 2019 will require a fiscal year 2019 appropriation, a continuing resolution, or passage of an alternative measure.”

“Why the change from earlier guidance that indicated the Coast Guard military members would not be paid on Dec. 31? Generally, the Coast Guard lacks the authority to pay its members during a lapse in appropriations. The circumstances of this lapse are unique because of the timeline of the lapse in relation to the military pay process. Ultimately, extensive research and legal analysis between the Coast Guard, DHS, and OMB determined the Coast Guard has the authority to execute the remainder of pay and allowances for December.”

To make an omelette...

They’ve been running what is essentially a racket for decades.

A few missed paychecks is not be the end of the world, and I’m not worried about any of them, or their services, in the least.

Democrat constituency (takers) hit hardest.

If it wasn’t for the American being murdered and American lives being ruined by uncontrolled invasion, I’d be rooting for this to go on forever.

A few missed paychecks means not making your mortgage payment or paying that car note for most people.

Go ahead, get on that jet when you have an air traffic controller worried about everything else than his job that he is being coerced into performing.

38 million low-income Americans lose food stamps - DEM VOTERS

That one will provide an excuse for widespread rioting and looting in the major Democrat-controlled cities.

Might be inconvenient. Plan accordingly.

Trump gave up on the Wall back in 17'-18' just like he did on 'Lock her Up'

Until he discovered last month that his base collapses if he folds on the Wall.

And democrats win if the economy crashes thanks to a government shutdown and they certainly can't face their donors if they cave to Trump on the Wall.

They just don’t understand that the overwhelming majority of Americans go entire weeks if not months without even thinking of the Federal Government.

For most of us, our annual foray into taxation is the only interaction we ever have and that’s just on paper.

If they can’t give out tax refunds, then how can they still deduct taxes from my paycheck? I know, I know, my employer withholds them for the government, but the government still accepts that payment.
