I want to recommend a book first to everyone here: It is called Explaining Postmodernism by Stephen Hicks. You need to understand postmodernism, because that's what you're up against. You're up against it far more than you know or think, and it's a much more well-developed and pervasive, pernicious, nihilistic, intellectually attractive doctrine than has yet come to public realization. It absolutely dominates the humanities and increasingly the social sciences in the universities.
See the postmodernists completely reject the structure of Western civilization.
And I mean completely, so I can give you an example, in one term -- Jacques Derrida. He is head trickster for the postmodernist movement, and he regarded Western culture -- let's call it the patriarchy -- as phallogocentric. Phallo comes from phallus, and so that's the insistence that what you see in Western culture is the consequence of the male-dominated oppressive self-serving society.
So I would say the humanities, and much of the social sciences have turned into a postmodernist neo-Marxist playground for radicals. The scholarship is terrible.
The APA ceased being a legitimate professional organization several decades ago.
But homosexuality isn’t.

The repeal of DADT was another consequence of the 1973 decision by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Removal followed a two year campaign Newsweek described as ongoing disruptive, chaotic attacks on psychiatrists and physiologists. Yet throughout these disruptive attacks, no academic papers arose at conferences refuting any research previously done. Eventually onslaughts forced sufficient abstentions, under-votes, and apprehensive responses for a third of APA’s 17,000 plus membership to approve removal.
After this decision, activists targeted leading individual researchers such as Dr. David Reuben to ensure perpetual sanctity for the APA action. No research papers would again arise to confirm initial therapy success rates of 30% to 60 %, substantiating that 7 of 10 homosexuals could eventually walk away from the lifestyle. Persistent activism over 37 years enabled ubiquitous infiltration of academia thereby ensuring pre-ordained theses, approved flexibility in research designs, suitable human data points, and enchanting statistical enhancements. The consequence for the military was to regard homosexual behavior as a strictly administrative issue. For this mental disorder, careers could not be saved with comparable successful programs targeting issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, or PTSD.
Psychology and Psychiatry have always had a tenuous hold on claims they were sciences with the standing of Chemistry and Physics. On the scale of intellectual rigor, their research more often resembles alchemy and/or oral history, and seldom, if ever, approaches the determinism found in a Chemistry laboratory. These disciplines have no problem abstaining from scientific research to make DSM manual changes based on popular societal acclaim, political manifesto, and marketing initiatives for elegant and expensive psychotropic drugs.
. Developments in statistics could have enabled them to a least determine there was a marginal or significant propensity for a particular disorder. Careful studies could have identified and graded methods of treatment. Given persistence in searching for correct methods of analysis, even accumulated episodic events could be sifted for transformation into valid information. Research would have proceeded more slowly and conclusions would have been less intuitive, but more stable.
The disciplines would more often have adhered to the medical principle of “first of all, do no harm”. In all probability preferred therapies would have resulted in far fewer people being enabled by society, or medicated into a passivity where they did not disturb others. Responsible research could also have acknowledged those pesky humans, who in spite of their genetics and upbringing, decide to live positive lives without APA professional help. Following those threads could have provided some valuable insights.
Instead, Psychology and Psychiatry chose to abandon all pretense of scientific rigor in exchange for popular societal and political acclaim. These three individuals need not have suffered the outcomes mentioned, if the military and other organizations were not prevented from providing help by the political scheme, which dominates these disciplines.
