ABQ Councilors want to restrict plastic bags, straws
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | January 7, 2019 | Jessica Dyer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Four Albuquerque City Councilors are pushing to limit the use of plastic bags, straws and foam containers in the state’s largest city.

Councilors Isaac Benton, Cynthia Borrego, Pat Davis and Diane Gibson, all Democrats, will tonight introduce the Albuquerque Clean & Green Retail Ordinance in an effort to “protect and enhance the city’s unique and precious environment, wildlife and beauty through the reduction of single-use non-compostable or non-recyclable bags, straws and containers and to encourage the use of reusable or sustainable options.”

The law would prohibit retailers from providing customers single-use plastic bags or foam containers for their purchases.

It would also prevent businesses from distributing single-use straws unless they are paper or biodegradable, though it requires businesses that give out such straws to also have plastic versions available upon request “to provide accessibility options for persons with disabilities and medical requirements.”

The legislation would also make it illegal to distribute single-use paper bags and any single-use carryout containers unless they meet the city’s recycling standards and the business alerts customers that they are recyclable.

More liberal hypocrisy to follow current regulation up in Santa Fe city. BTW, has anyone tested and posted how unsanitary those reusable canvas bags are?

All of my neighbors re-use their plastic bags to pickup doggy poop and I certainly use them to clean out my cat's litter box several times a week.

So if these fools force this on us, we will have to buy plastic bags just for poop pickup.

Single use, my oversized butt. I’ve re-used the supposedly single-use bags to clean out the cat’s litter box and to take food to work.

Whales in the Rio Grande River cannot digest the plastic straws.

I’m kind of old, but I recall straws used to be made out of some kind of paper.

I suspect that washing them with a load of clothes would take care of that problem, if done regularly.

(Not that I giver a rat’s arse what the environ-MENTAL-ists want; just a suggestion.)

Sounds like ABQ has a nasty case of leftism. It should be eradicated like any vermin should.

Every single person who thinks this is a good idea needs to walk slowly thru a Lowe’s or a Home Depot or even a Wal-Mart & see all the PLASTIC packaging that encloses items to prevent theft. Some are called ‘blister packs’ & are vacummed down onto the form of the object inside. Some are just a bubble that the item(s) fit under.

No matter which type, this is ALL ‘single use plastic’. How about Ziplock bags??? How about Saran Wrap & it’s imitations??? How about all the packaging on cosmetics?

How about the wrapping on items that need to be kept somewhat sterile??? Bags of candy? Bulk bags of cereal?
Bottles of soda-—single use? Containers of milk??? Orange juice?? The plastic wrapper on the ham I just bought? The wrapper on the frozen turkey I put into the freezer? The bread wrappers??? The plastic bags in the produce department? Same in the meat department? Eggs come in specially shaped styrofoam containers !!! Spices come in plastic jars. How about baby food? Glass or plastic? Depends come in plastic wrappings, & disposable diapers have plastic outer layer. You want to get rid of those? THEY CERTAINLY are SINGLE USE!!!!

Before you all are so eager to jump onto this ‘single use plastic ban’, please look at the retail world around you. You will not like what you finally realize.

Also- kitchen trash bags & larger bags used for lawn refuse. Many places you cannot burn your leaves & grass clippings.

For some parts of the USA society-—large plastic bags are LUGGAGE!!!
