I don’t have a problem with that - 70% of $174,000 per year salary = $121,800 tax...and then let’s go after their available allowances as members.. She was worried about not being able to afford to live in DC on her salary - try it on $52,200. I assume she already has an apartment - wonder how she managed it - an advance perhaps? Why aren’t they going without pay? If any job in DC is non-essential, we’re looking at them!

The United States had one or more income tax rates north of 70% from 1942 to 1980. And yet somehow people were still working and producing then, during a time which you could say was the height of the power of our country.

The Rich-Rich always find a way to escape paying anything.
The moderately rich will pay some.
The merely rich will pay a lot more. A LOT more.
The middle class is thoroughly screwed either through sky-high taxes or a completely devastated economy or (more likely) both.

Go to the this link, which points to the historical part of the Wikipedia page on Income Tax in the United States. There you will see some tables that show what I said about the top tax rates in the U.S. being above 70% for about 4 decades was correct.
