Ocasio-Cortez floats 70 percent tax on rich to pay for 'Green New Deal'

Ocasio-Cortez’s climate plan would reduce U.S. carbon emissions to zero — and eliminate the use of fossil fuels — within 12 years.

“It’s going to require a lot of rapid change that we don’t even conceive as possible right now,” she said. “What is the problem with trying to push our technological capacities to the furthest extent possible?”

When Cooper suggested her plan to pay for it was “radical,” Ocasio-Cortez embraced the label.

“Well, I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country,” she said. “Abraham Lincoln made the radical decision to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the radical decision to embark on establishing programs like Social Security. That is radical.”

“Do you call yourself a radical?” Cooper asked.

“Yeah. You know, if that’s what radical means, call me a radical,” she replied

Heck - there are so many of these loud mouth women now in the House, who to tackle first? They’re going to have a lottery in the House to see who gets taken out first...then they can move to the senate and start with Harris and then Warren...

“”Start docking her pay 70%.””

I don’t have a problem with that - 70% of $174,000 per year salary = $121,800 tax...and then let’s go after their available allowances as members.. She was worried about not being able to afford to live in DC on her salary - try it on $52,200. I assume she already has an apartment - wonder how she managed it - an advance perhaps? Why aren’t they going without pay? If any job in DC is non-essential, we’re looking at them!

This should be fun! Benefits should be taxable so have at it!

Simple question: why work if the government is going to steal your production?

The United States had one or more income tax rates north of 70% from 1942 to 1980. And yet somehow people were still working and producing then, during a time which you could say was the height of the power of our country.

DOA in the Senate.

Maybe in 2019. 2021 probably DOA. 2023 - all bets are off.

The Rich-Rich always find a way to escape paying anything.

The moderately rich will pay some.

The merely rich will pay a lot more. A LOT more.

The middle class is thoroughly screwed either through sky-high taxes or a completely devastated economy or (more likely) both.

Go to the this link, which points to the historical part of the Wikipedia page on Income Tax in the United States. There you will see some tables that show what I said about the top tax rates in the U.S. being above 70% for about 4 decades was correct.
